Second Period Sinks Women’s Ice Hockey in 5-1 Loss at Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. (November 3, 2017) – Four goals against in the second period on Friday afternoon spelled defeat for the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team at Sullivan Arena. Saint Anselm left the middle frame with a 4-1 lead and went on to post a 5-1 victory in the front end of a weekend home-and-home series.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-3-0, while Saint Anselm improves to 4-0-0. The two teams will wrap up the weekend series on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Pierce. Opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon, Mass.

After the first period went scoreless, Saint Anselm opened the scoring just 91 seconds into the second frame. Senior forward Paige Gorecki banged home a rebound for her second goal of the season, while freshman forward Katy Meehan and sophomore forward Kaley Campbell picked up assists.

Franklin Pierce evened things at 1-1 at the 8:31 mark. Freshman defenseman Carolyn Drowne (Bridgewater, Mass.) netted her first collegiate goal, as she took a shot from the top of the circle, which beat Saint Anselm sophomore goaltender Michaela Kane low on the blocker side. Senior forward Alex Brolsma (Bloomington, Minn.) had the feed from the corner -- her 94th career point -- while freshman forward Haley Parker (Londonderry, N.H.) added a helper as well.

Later in the second period, Saint Anselm struck three times in a span of 4:19 to surge to a 4-1 lead. First, the eventual game-winning goal came on the power play at 13:18. It was another rebound right in front of the net, this time put home by Campbell for her third goal of the campaign. Meehan and sophomore defenseman Megan Klaus provided the assists.

A pair of unassisted tallies rounded out the period's scoring. At 14:03, just 45 seconds after the Campbell goal, freshman forward Madison Sprague picked the short side on freshman goaltender Kelly Turney (Fort Gratiot, Mich.) from the right circle, for her first of the season, to make it 3-1. At 17:37, sophomore forward Amanda Conger notched her first of the season as well, on a wraparound attempt, as the puck was deflected in off the stick of a Franklin Pierce defenseman.

The Hawks capped the scoring with the third period's only goal, a power-play marker at 16:59. Klaus had the original shot on the play, from the point, and Meehan salted away the rebound for her third goal of the year. Senior forward Kaitlyn Spillane added an assist on the play as well, as Saint Anselm created the 5-1 final.

Turney (0-2-0) finished with 27 saves against 32 shots on goal and suffered the loss in net for Franklin Pierce. In the other crease, Kane (2-0-0) stopped 18 of 19 shots to pick up the win for Saint Anselm.
