Women’s Ice Hockey Stopped at Saint Anselm, 4-1

Ketterman nets lone goal

MANCHESTER, N.H. (January 23, 2016) – Junior forward Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska) scored first on Saturday afternoon for the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team, but Saint Anselm scored the remaining four to deal a 4-1 loss to the Ravens in New England Hockey Conference play at Sullivan Arena. Senior forward Sarah Geisinger scored twice in the win for Saint Anselm, while junior forward Alex Starzyk added a goal and two assists.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 12-3-1 (6-3-0 NEHC), and has its unbeaten streak snapped at 10 (9-0-1), while Saint Anselm improves to 15-2-0 (9-2-0 NEHC).

Ketterman got the Ravens on the board early on Saturday, striking before the game was three minutes old. Her ninth goal of the season came unassisted, at the 2:41 mark. Starzyk provided the answer for Saint Anselm at the 8:07 mark to level the game at 1-1. Junior defenseman Martha Findley picked up the lone assist on Starzyk's team-leading 12th of the campaign.

Saint Anselm would score the only goal of the second period, which would turn out to be the game-winning goal. It was Geisinger's sixth of the season, which would come unassisted just 27 seconds into the middle stanza.

After the remainder of the second went without further scoring, Saint Anselm tacked on a pair of insurance goals in the third period. First, at the 6:19 mark, Geisinger notched her second of the day, while Starzyk and sophomore forward Kaitlyn Spillane added the assists. Later, on the man-advantage at 14:02, Starzyk and freshman forward Sara McNamara set up the eighth goal of the year for senior forward Alex Kazmer.

The Kazmer goal was the first power-play goal of the season surrendered by Franklin Pierce, after the Ravens had killed off their first 56 shorthanded situations. It was the first power-play goal scored against Franklin Pierce since March 1, 2015 against Holy Cross. Even after the goal, the Franklin Pierce penalty kill still stands at 98.2% (56-for-57) on the season.

Junior goaltender Shannon O'Neil (Tewksbury, Mass.) finished with 27 saves against 31 shots on goal and took the loss (6-3-1) in goal for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the ice, junior netminder Hannah Synnott (13-1-0) stopped 16 of the 17 shots on her goal for Saint Anselm.

The Ravens return to the ice on Friday, Jan. 29, when they get another crack at Saint Anselm, as the Hawks come to Winchendon to complete the NEHC home-and-home matchup. Opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
