Pair of Third-Period Goals Secure 3-1 Victory for Women’s Ice Hockey Against Saint Michael’s

Danforth adds power-play goal

Doucette Doucette went for 1-1-2, including the game-winning goal, on Tuesday afternoon against Saint Michael's.

WINCHENDON, Mass. (January 7, 2014) – Sophomore forwards Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.) and Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.) each notched a goal and an assist on Tuesday afternoon, with the former scoring the game-winning goal, to lead the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team to a 3-1 win over Saint Michael's at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Junior defenseman Fernanda Saavedra tallied the lone goal in defeat for Saint Michael's.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 10-2-0 and reaches double digits in wins for the first time, in just the program's second season. With the loss, Saint Michael's falls to 1-10-1 (0-6-0 ECAC East). Franklin Pierce held a 34-20 edge in shots in the game.

Most of the first period went by the boards without a goal before Baker opened the scoring with 15 seconds to play in the frame. Baker put away her team-leading 10th goal of the season from the edge of the right-wing circle, while Doucette and sophomore forward Michaela Faia (Malden, Mass.) chipped in the assists at the 19:45 mark.

From there, the game would go without another goal until the 4:37 mark of the third stanza, when the Ravens pushed the lead to 2-0 as Doucette jammed home a rebound for her fourth of the campaign. Again the whole line was a part of the goal, as Faia and Baker picked up assists.

Franklin Pierce pushed the lead as high as 3-0 at the 7:20 mark of the third on a quick passing play on the power play. The puck came to sophomore defenseman Hayley Arnold (Barre, Vt.) at the right point, and she slid a pass over to freshman forward Nina Danforth (Stratford, Conn.) in the left circle. Danforth quickly sent the puck into the middle, where fellow freshman forward Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska) redirected home her fifth of the season.

Saint Michael's got on the board at 16:55 to create the 3-1 final, off a slick individual effort by Saavedra. She deked her way around a pair of Ravens to find a shooting lane near the edge of the left-wing circle and snapped a shot to the top shelf to spoil the shutout bid of freshman goaltender Shannon O'Neil (Tewksbury, Mass.). Freshman defenseman Athena Akiki contributed the lone assist on the play.

O'Neil finished the afternoon with 19 saves to pick up the win (5-0-0) between the pipes for Franklin Pierce. At the other end, freshman Tina Frasca stopped 31 shots but was stuck with the loss (0-4-1) in front of the Saint Michael's net.

The Ravens return to the ice on Friday, Jan. 10, when they remain home to host Nichols. Opening faceoff is set for 8:15 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
