Women’s Ice Hockey Blanked at Saint Anselm, 5-0, to Open Second Half

Ravens women's ice hockey The Ravens return to action on Tuesday afternoon at home against Saint Michael's.

MANCHESTER, N.H. (January 5, 2014) – Senior defenseman Andi Foss notched three points on a goal and two assists on Sunday afternoon, as Saint Anselm shutout the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team, 5-0, at Sullivan Arena. Saint Anselm scored a pair of shorthanded goals in the contest.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 9-2-0 and has its six-game winning streak snapped, while Saint Anselm improves to 11-1-0 (5-0-0 ECAC East) and has won eight straight. The Hawks put the Franklin Pierce defense under siege for much of the afternoon, piling up a 47-12 advantage in shots, including a 16-3 edge in the second period, when Saint Anselm scored four times.

The Ravens were able to hold off Saint Anselm through the first period and the opening six minutes of the second frame before the Hawks opened the scoring. Junior defenseman Franny Nicholson put home the only goal Saint Anselm needed on the afternoon, unassisted, at the 6:48 mark of the middle stanza. Just 53 seconds later, the Hawks made it 2-0, on the fifth of the season for junior forward Tiffany Herron, with assists going to sophomore forward Alex Kazmer and senior forward Courtney Winters.

After the midway point of the period, Saint Anselm put home its first of two shorthanded scores in the game. At 11:47, sophomore forward Sarah Geisinger put away her fourth of the season, with Foss adding her first assist of the day. Less than two minutes later, at 13:23, the Hawks capped the four-goal frame on the fourth of the season for Kazmer, while Foss and Herron provided the helpers.

Saint Anselm also scored the third period's only goal to create the 5-0 final. At the 9:28 mark of the final frame, Foss notched her third goal of the season, an unassisted, shorthanded tally.

Freshman goaltender Noelle White (Corona, Calif.) started in net for Franklin Pierce, made 21 saves against 25 shots over 33:23 and took the loss (5-2-0) before being lifted after the fourth Saint Anselm goal. Fellow freshman netminder Shannon O'Neil (Tewksbury, Mass.) logged the remaining 26:37 and made 21 saves against 22 shots. At the other end of the ice, junior Lindsey Brown made 12 saves for Saint Anselm to pick up her second shutout of the season, along with the win (7-1-0).

The Ravens return to the ice on Tuesday, Jan. 7, when they return home to host Saint Michael's. Opening faceoff is set for 12:30 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
