Davies Collects Tournament MVP, Peirce Selected to All-Tournament Team at Golden Bear Classic

SINKING SPRING, Pa. (February 11, 2018) – Franklin Pierce University women's bowler Jessica Davies (Cape Coral, Fla.) brought home the Tournament MVP Award at the Golden Bear Classic hosted by Kutztown University at the Berks Lanes.

Davies averaged a 19.86 baker frame average which was good enough for best in the tournament. Teammate Krysta Peirce (Casco, Mich.) was named to the All-Tournament First Team after rolling a 19.09 mark. To qualify for the All-Tournament Team, athletes had to bowl at least 80 frames out of a possible 100 on Friday and Saturday.

Overall, the Ravens were 8-5 over the course of the classic knocking over a total of 10,046 pins. They finished sixth in the field of teams after staying in fourth for the majority of the tourney. On the season, FPU is 37-31 overall. On Saturday, Franklin Pierce defeated no. 18 nationally-ranked Duquesne by a 945-935 score. Duquesne eventually won the first place title by going 8-3 and dropping 10,247 pins. No. 11 nationally-ranked Adelphi University finished second while no. 14 ranked Saint Francis (Pa.) placed third.

Day One – Friday

The Crimson and Grey were 4-1 over day one of the baker tournament knocking down a total of 4,630 pins. They improved their overall seasonal record to 30-26 with the four victories as their only setback came against no. 14 nationally-ranked Saint Francis (Pa.). Saint Francis (Pa.) stood in the top spot in the rankings with an unblemished 5-0 mark and a pinfall of 4,829. East Coast Conference foe Adelphi (4-1, 4,768) and Kutztown (5-0, 4,660) rounded out the tournament top-three.

Davies and Peirce rolled the best baker averages for the Ravens Friday with totals of 20.04 and 19.86 respectively.

FPU's best stretch of strings came in the 1,045-895 victory against Morgan State in their final baker match of the day. The team of sophomore Alexa Asta (Jackson, N.J.), freshman Skyler Mulligan-Brown (New Milford, Conn.), Peirce, senior Nicolette Vucak (Garfield, N.J.) and Davies tallied the three highest games during competition Friday with a 217 in game one, a day-high 260 in game two and a 223 for their third string of the duel. 

Day Two - Saturday

FPU was 4-1 on day two to run their two-day record to 8-2 and total pinfall to 9,163. The Crimson and Grey increased their overall mark to 34-27 with the four victories as their only defeat came at the hands Adelphi. The Panthers climbed into the top spot from second place and held a 125 pin advantage over second place program Saint Francis (Pa.). Kutztown dropped two spots to fifth place while Duquesne jumped into third place.

As she did on Friday, Davies led the Ravens in baker average (19.86) with teammate Peirce rolling a 19.09.

The Ravens highest baker score came in the opening duel of the day against Roberts Wesleyan when they dropped a total of 1,013 pins. The team of Mulligan-Brown sophomore Erin Mastropietro (Mechanicville, N.Y.), sophomore Jenna Harrington (Barneveld, N.Y.), sophomore Katey Comstock (Hartland, Vt.) and Peirce upset Duquesne 945-935 by rolling a day-best 231 string.

Day Three – Sunday

In the best of seven game format, the Ravens came away with no wins, but they won three strings, one versus Duquesne and two against Caldwell.

The Ravens return to the lanes this coming weekend at the Molloy 2-Day at the Sheridan Lanes in Mineola, N.Y.
