Ravens Nearly Complete Comeback, #15 USciences Pulls Away Late

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (November 10, 2018) – The #15 nationally-ranked University of the Sciences women's basketball team pulled away late in the fourth quarter to hand Franklin Pierce University a 56-48 loss during the final day of the Conference Challenge at the Bobby Morgan Arena. The Devils begin the season hot moving to 2-0 in non-conference play while the loss was the second of the year for FPU.

This was a fairly even matchup as both teams shot basically the same percentage from the floor and from long range, however, the Devils attempted and converted nearly twice the three-point attempts than the Ravens. FPU tallied more points down low (20-to-14) and produced more via their reserves (16 points to nine).

Freshman forward Izzy Lipinski (Farmington, Conn.) led the Crimson and Grey with 10 points and seven boards to go along with one assist and one steal in only 20 minutes of play. Team captain Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) chalked up nine points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Sophomore forward Freya Cooney (Woodbridge, England) had a team-high eight points off the bench.

USciences had a trio of double-digit scorers led by guard Irisa Ye who produced a game-high 15 points with a match-best eight boards and three assists.

The Ravens held a 4-0 lead a couple possessions into the contest as Mosley converted a second chance lay-in and Lipinski buried a jumper off a Demi Akins (Cambridge, Mass.) feed. The Ravens would only tally two more points in the first quarter when the Devils went on a 16-2 run to end the quarter using a barrage of three-pointers and capped off by a Ye layup with four seconds left.

Both squads shooting woes carried over into the second stanza combining for a total of 18 points between both teams. The host Devils led 27-13 at the intermission. Sophomore guard Hannah Everidge (Baldwinville, Mass.) brought the Raven deficit to 11, 29-18 by knocking down a long-range attempt in the third quarter. Following a Jess Huber three-ball, the Ravens answered with seven straight markers to end the quarter.

FPU's 14-2 scoring binge which began when Akins drained a three cut the Raven deficit to one, 37-36 at the 7:19 mark in the fourth quarter after a Hannah Martin (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and1 and a Cooney layup. The teams traded points and possessions until two Mosley freebies deadlocked the score at 41-41 with 5:16 to go.

Franklin Pierce took their first lead, 43-41 since being ahead 4-0 in the first quarter via a Cooney jumper from the paint. Alex Thomas of USciences tied the game on the next trip down the court by converting a layup. Thomas' make was the start of a 12-0 game-clinching run for the Devils.

The Ravens return home to the friendly confines of The Fieldhouse on Wednesday when they open up Northeast-10 Conference play against Saint Anselm College at 5:30 p.m.
