Tiffany Johnson Hits GW Basket w/:03 Left to Give #17 Women's Basketball a 63-62 Win Over St. Mike's

Jewel White tops 1,000 career points and 700 career rebounds

COLCHESTER, Vt. (November 27, 2011) -- Junior guard Tiffany Johnson (St. Albans, Vt.) knocked down the game-winning jump shot with just :03 remaining to lift the No. 17 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team to a 63-62 win at Saint Michael's on Sunday afternoon in the Ross Sports Center in Colchester, Vt. The win ran the Ravens record to 3-0 overall and in the Northeast-10, while St. Mike's dipped to 4-3 and 1-2 in league play.
In addition to Johnson's thrilling jumper in the final seconds, another highlight on the afternoon for Franklin Pierce was the performance by senior Jewel White (Worcester, Mass.) who notched a double-double with 21 points and 16 rebounds, and in the process, topped 1,000 points and 700 rebounds for her career. White currently stands at 1,004 points for her career and 701 rebounds.
White gave the Ravens a 59-57 lead on a layup with 3:55 remaining, but the Purple Knights were able to go on top a minute later when Caitlin Quinn knocked down a three-pointer to make it 60-59 St. Mike's. The Purple Knights extended their lead to 62-59 moments later with a jumper from Megan Olsen.
White was able to stem the tide with a layup on Franklin Pierce's next possession, and the teams traded missed shots over their next couple of series. Junior forward Amanda Saab (Windham, N.H.), who had a fantastic game coming off the bench, made a steal with only :18 left to give possession back to the Ravens for one final shot. Johnson made Saab's steal count as she knocked down the jumper in the waning seconds to extend Franklin Pierce's unbeaten record in the early going of the season.
Johnson finished the game with six points, four assists and three rebounds, while Saab saw 29 minutes off the bench and contributed eight points, four assists, three blocks, two rebounds and two assists. Senior forwardMarielle Giroud (Martigny, Switzerland), who in Tuesday's win over Stonehill topped 700 rebounds for her career, added nine points and six rebounds.
Three Purple Knights scored in double-figures, including 20 points from Olsen. Coreen Hennessy chipped in with 13 points, while Nicole Adach added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Olsen scored eight of Saint Michael's first 11 points as the Purple Knights opened up an 11-4 lead a little more than four minutes into the game.
St. Mike's continued to hold onto its lead over the next several minutes, but back-to-back triples from Giroud and sophomore guard Brooke Coderre (Woonsocket, R.I.) gave Franklin Pierce its first lead of the game at 18-16 with 9:31 left until halftime.
Those baskets sparked the Ravens, who went on a 9-2 run minutes later to open up a 27-20 advantage with 6:45 to go in the half. Johnson kick-started it with a pair of free throws, while senior guard Lekia Cowen (Hopedale, Mass.) added a three and White capped it with a layup. Franklin Pierce eventually took a 35-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Giroud and Cowen each made a basket in the opening minutes of the second half as Franklin Pierce continued to keep its lead around the 4-to-6 point range. However, St. Mike's used a 6-0 run during the midway portion of the half to turn a 48-45 deficit into a 51-48 edge with 9:45 to go in the game. Hennessy scored four points during the surge.
The game would see four ties and three lead changes over the final nine minutes of the game, including the frantic final seconds which saw Johnson become the hero with her winning basket.
Franklin Pierce returns to action Wednesday when the Ravens travel to Manchester to face Southern New Hampshire at 5:30 p.m.
