Women's Basketball Wins Sixth Straight with 67-48 Triumph Over Le Moyne

Marielle Giroud tosses in game-high 15 points

BOXSCORE

RINDGE, N.H. (January 29, 2011) – The Franklin Pierce University women’s basketball team picked up its sixth-straight win Saturday afternoon with a 67-48 triumph over Le Moyne at The Fieldhouse in Rindge. The Ravens improved to 16-5 overall and 12-3 in the Northeast-10, while the Dolphins dipped to 6-13 and 3-12 in league play.

Junior forward Marielle Giroud (Martigny, Switzerland) led three Ravens who scored in double-figures, as she pumped in a game-high 15 points, while also totaling six rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block.

Junior guard Lekia Cowen (Hopedale, Mass.) tossed in 13 points while also pulling down four rebounds and swiping two steals. The other Raven to notch double-digits in scoring was junior center Jewel White (Worcester, Mass.), who narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Courtney Coryea was the lone Le Moyne player to tally double-figures in scoring as she netted 12 points, while also collecting 12 boards for a double-double of her own.

Franklin Pierce dictated the pace of play right from the start, scoring nine of the first 11 points, seven minutes into the contest. Giroud laid in a pair of baskets and Cowen completed a three-point play on a layup and foul shot to help stake the Ravens to the early lead.

The Ravens opened their lead up to 12 at 19-7 moments later following a three-pointer from freshman guard Brittany Martelle (Brookfield, Conn.).  Le Moyne stemmed the tide with a three, but only briefly, as Franklin Pierce reeled off the next eight points, sparked by back-to-back triples from sophomore guard Tiffany Johnson (St. Albans, Vt.), in building a commanding 27-10 with 6:43 left in the half. The Ravens went on to eventually take a 31-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The second half was a mirror image of the first with the Ravens taking control of the pace of play. With the lone exception of Le Moyne cutting it to nine early in the stanza, Franklin Pierce led by double-digits the rest of the way in earning the win. The Ravens led by as many as 24 on two occasions in the second half.

Franklin Pierce shot 41 percent from the field (24-of-59), while holding the Dolphins to only 35 percent shooting (19-of-54). The Ravens also held a 38-33 advantage on the glass, as all nine players that played each had one rebound.

Franklin Pierce returns to action Wednesday night when the Ravens play host to Stonehill at 5:30 p.m. in The Fieldhouse in Rindge.
