Mamone Stymies Skyhawks, Tosses Complete Game Shutout in Raven Win

EASTON, Mass. (April 25, 2019) – Franklin Pierce University softball junior southpaw Amelia Mamone (Averill Park, N.Y.) hurled the first complete game shutout of her collegiate career as the Ravens scratched across the only run of the game in the bottom of the first during a 1-0 victory Thursday afternoon against Northeast-10 Conference opponent Stonehill College at Fr. Gartland Field. With the win, the Crimson and Grey move to 10-29, 6-19 NE10 and 4-15 Northeast Division while the Skyhawks drop to 14-23, 10-15 NE10 and 8-11 in the division.

Mamone was dominant in the pitcher's duel which saw a combined five hits between the two squads. She scattered two hits and two walks striking out four batters on 89 total pitches collecting her third win of the campaign. It was also her 28th appearance of the season which set the new single-season program record. Opposing starter Katherine Rayner fell to 13-13 allowing the lone run, three hits, and four walks.

Junior third baseman Ashley Conway (Salem, N.H.), freshman right fielder Lexi Garcia (Sylmar, Calif.) and freshman first baseman Cat Simmons (Pine Plains, N.Y.) provided the hits for FPU with Simmons knocking in the only run of the battle to go along with a stolen base. Stonehill catcher Michelle Theilgard and right fielder Taylor Whaley chipped in the two base knocks for the Skyhawks.

In the top of the first, shortstop Jess Rego (Richmond, R.I.) walked and teammate, second baseman Kaitlyn Rooney (Shirley, Mass.) reached via free pass as well. Catcher Allie Martinez (Upland, Calif.) sacrificed the two runners over into scoring position setting the stage for a Simmons flare single to left field which plated the only run of the contest, however, Rooney was gunned down at third base trying to advance.

Stonehill threatened in the home half of the third inning. A leadoff single was wasted as Whaley was put out off a fielder's choice. Caroline Casey, the runner at first was immediately thrown out trying to steal for the third and final out of the frame. Their other chance, runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth was thwarted when Mamone sent pinch hitter Cassie Holmgren back to the dugout looking at a called third strike. Three groundouts in the bottom of the seventh capped off the Raven win.

The Ravens conclude their 2019 season on the road Saturday at Stonehill with a doubleheader at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
