Ravens Defeated Twice During Day Two in Florida

LEESBURG, Fla. (March 7, 2019) – The Franklin Pierce University softball team completed the second day of their campaign opening trip to Florida on Thursday suffering two losses to Minnesota State University Moorhead 4-0 and 12-0 to Alderson Broaddus University. With the wins, the Dragons move to 4-11 overall and the Battlers improve to 2-8.

Game One: Dragons 4, Ravens 0 (Final)

Raven sophomore pitcher Cyrena Zemaitis (Goshen, Conn.) took the hill for Pierce and pitched five and two-thirds of an inning striking out six batters and allowing four runs – none earned. Teammate Amelia Mamone (Averill Park, N.Y.) came on in relief for two batters and induced one punch out. Freshman catcher Cat Simmons (Pine Plains, N.Y.) tallied the only hit in the contest for FPU.

Dragon starting hurler Becky Berth twirled a complete game one-hitter with a walk and two strikeouts. Designated player Payton Gaber went 2-for-3 at the dish with a double and RBI.

Berth helped her own cause in the bottom of the third reaching base via an error. She was sacrificed over to second base the next batter and was plated by Gaber with a two-out line drive RBI double. Minn. State tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to up their edge to 4-0. Simmons hit came with two away in the top half of the seventh inning to spoil the no-no bid.

Game Two: Battlers 12, Ravens 0 (Final – 6 Innings)

An eight-run top of the sixth explosion iced the contest for Alderson Broaddus. Mamone earned the game two start and punched out six batters allowing three runs – two earned and five hits in three innings. For the designated away team, Jordyn Kenneally tossed a complete game shutout striking out six batters in six innings. First basemen Brianna Burger and right fielder Jazmine Martin tallied a double each with two RBI.

The Battlers broke the 0-0 deadlock in the top of the fourth as pinch runner Nina Maroney crossed the plate on a passed ball. The next batter brought home another run off a sacrifice fly to left field expanding the lead to 2-0. A Maura Mallon ground out to first capped off the three-run inning.

In the top of the fifth, AB was threatening following a leadoff double and error. The Battlers attempted a double-steal that was snuffed out by FPU when second basemen Jess Rego (Richmond, R.I.) threw home and catcher Ashley Conway (Salem, N.H.) applied the tag for the first out of the frame. Burger fried a one-out double to grow the margin to 4-0. The Ravens ended the inning with two strikeouts.

FPU's counterparts had five consecutive batters reach base resulting in two runs after bases-loaded walks in the sixth. Martin threw in the dagger with a two-run two-bagger.

The Ravens play two once again tomorrow when they take on Malone University at 9:30 a.m. and Bloomfield College at 11:45 a.m.
