Assumption Sweeps Ravens on Sunday

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 23, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University softball team was swept in five innings by Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption College by 10-2 and 10-1 scores on Sunday afternoon at Marois Field. The wins move the Greyhounds to 15-13 overall and 12-5 in NE10 play while the Ravens lost their 27th game overall and 17th in league play.

Game One: Greyhounds 10, Ravens 2 (Final – 5 Innings)

Raven shortstop Ashley Deyo (Dover, N.H.) was 2-for-3 at the dish with two singles while third basemen Mikaela Ballmer (Birdsboro, Pa.) and right fielder Allison Collins (Sandown, N.H.) were 1-for-2 each with run scoring singles.

Assumption began the first by dropping three runs on the Ravens. Centerfielder Ashley Clark opened the frame by singling to first. Designated player Caitlin Mirabell attempted to sacrifice her teammate over, but reached first on a throwing error by Ravens starting pitcher Sabrina LoMonaco (Franklin, Mass.) Shortstop Ashley Abad strolled to first via a walk to load the bases with no one out. LoMonaco struck out Julia Mazzeo for the first out of the frame, but the next batter first basemen Stephanie Menard recorded a sacrifice fly to left for the game's first run.

Mirabell dashed home on a passed ball and Abad came around to score on an error by the third basemen to increase the Greyhounds advantage to 3-0 early. LoMonaco induced a groundout to conclude the bottom of the first.

The hosts tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the second as Clark walked, stole second base, advanced to third on a passed ball and was plated by a Mirabell groundout to second.

The Ravens had their own scoring chance in the top of the third as Collins reached base via an error. Collins moved up to third on a Jaclyn Cortese (Upton, Mass.) single, but was stranded in scoring position as Abbigael Cook (Smithfield, R.I.) flew out to center.

Franklin Pierce would score twice in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to two as Ballmer and Collins stroked RBI singles that plated backstop Ashley Conway (Salem, N.H.) who reached via a fielder's choice and Dominique Bisaccia (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) who ripped a one bagger to left.

Assumption would score two runs in the bottom of the fourth and four markers in the bottom half of the fifth to run rule the Ravens.

Game Two: Greyhounds 10, Ravens 2 (Final – 5 Innings)

The Ravens could only muster three hits on the afternoon as Assumption starting pitcher Jurnee Serating-Ware scattered three hits across four innings while allowing an unearned run and striking out six batters in game two of the twinbill.

Assumption would tally 10 runs across the first three frames to take a 10-0 lead as they added three in the bottom of the first, five in the bottom of the second with Mirabell's two run triple as the key blow and two in the bottom of the third as Victoria Petire lofted a solo homer.

Franklin Pierce would score one in the top of the fourth as Ballmer singled to center, stole second and scored on error.

The Ravens will return to the field tomorrow for a single game at Southern New Hampshire with first pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
