GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (March 26, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University softball team returned to action on Sunday for a Northeast-10 Conference twinbill at Adelphi University on Janet L. Ficke Field. The Ravens suffered two setbacks, a 13-3 five inning game one decision and an 8-0 game two loss to the Panthers. Both losses were the 11th and 12th of the year for the Crimson and Grey and the first two conference defeats while Adelphi improves to 12-8-1, 5-1 NE10.

Game One: Panthers 13, Ravens 3 (Final – 5 Innings)

Junior shortstop Jaclyn Cortese (Upton, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and her first homer of the year. Teammate and designated player Dominique Bisaccia (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) went 1-for-2 with a double and a RBI.

For the Panthers, Lindsay Mapes pitched five innings while only surrendering five hits three runs while striking out nine batters while bettering her record to 7-3. Sophomore Sabrina LoMonaco (Franklin, Mass.) took her fourth loss of the year in two and two thirds of an inning.

The Ravens came out of the gate fast in the opening inning as junior leftfielder Jillian Ostrander (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) smoked a double to left field. Cortese, the next batter, singled to left which put runners at the corners with no outs. Sophomore backstop Ashley Deyo (Dover, N.H.) drove Ostrander home on a sacrifice fly for the first run of the contest. Cassidy Sorenson (Billerica, Mass.) flied out to short and Mikaela Ballmer (Birdsboro, Pa.) reached base on a hit by pitch as runners stood on first and second with one down. Bisaccia stepped to the plate and deposited an RBI double to left which plated Cortese and advanced Ballmer to third. A strikeout ended the frame as FPU jumped ahead 2-0 early on.

Adelphi cracked the scoring column in the bottom of the third as they tallied three runs all on RBI singles by Stephanie Staiano, Fallon McCarthy and Krista King to move ahead 3-2. In the next half inning, Cortese deposited a solo shot into left field to knot the score at three all. The Panthers would add seven runs in the bottom of the third off the strength of a two run scoring triple off the bat of Danielle Cutuli and a three-run jack to left from Brenna Martini to take control of game one.

Game Two: Panthers 8, Ravens 0 (Final – 5 Innings)

Franklin Pierce had an opportunity to score the first run in the top half of the second. Sorenson reached base via a walk and Amelia Mamone (Wynantskill, N.Y.) stroked a single through the right side as Sorenson galloped to second base. A strikeout of Aubrey Bianco (Marlboro, N.Y.) ensued as Allison Collins (Sandown, N.H.) stepped into the batter's box. Collins struck a single up the middle, but Mamone was ruled out at second base which ended the inning.

The Ravens would muster only one hit the reminder of the game as the Panthers scored five runs in the second and three in the third to compete the doubleheader sweep.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday when they travel to NE10 opponent Stoenhill on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
