Franklin Pierce Women’s Fours Compete at Textile Regatta

Both Raven crews post top-20 finishes in season-opening event

LOWELL, Mass. (October 6, 2008) - The Franklin Pierce women's rowing opened its 2008 Fall Head Season with a pair of top-20 finishes at the Textile River Regatta on the Merrimack River on Sunday.

Two women's four crews produced top-20 finishes in the open division for Franklin Pierce. The Ravens "A" crew placed 12th out of the 25 boats that competed in that event, completing the four-mile course in 24:54.150. The Ravens "B" crew turned in a 19th-place finish with a time of 25:34.006. The A-crew finished ahead of teams from UMass Lowell and Colby and ranked fifth among the collegiate teams in the event. The B-crew finished ninth among collegiate teams, ahead of the University of Vermont, Assumption College and Brandies University.

Rowing for Franklin Pierce's A crew was senior Cassandra Ela (Lancaster, Mass./Nashoba Regional) at stroke, sophomore Mairecait Binienda (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) in the two-seat, sophomore Mary Holland (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin Academy) at three-seat and senior Vanessa Leon (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) in the bow, with sophomore Julie Waxman (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) as the coxswain.

Rowing for the B-crew was sophomore Brigit Arell (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) at stroke, freshman Katie Dougherty (Lansdowne, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast) in the two-seat, freshman Eric Tomaszewski (Nashua, N.H./Academy of Notre Dame) at three seat and freshman Lesley Cutting (Glenville, N.Y./Niskayuna) in the bow, with junior Kristen Sheridan (Auburn, N.H./Manchester Memorial) as the coxswain.

Franklin Pierce is back on the water on Saturday for the New Hampshire Rowing Championships a few miles north on the Merrimack River in Hooksett, N.H.
