Track & Field Sees Two Earn All-America Honors at NCAA Championships
PITTSBURG, Kan. (March 9, 2019) – Sophomore Hugo Arlabosse (Marseille, France) and senior CeCe Telfer (Lebanon, N.H.) each earned All-America First Team honors on Saturday to highlight the Franklin Pierce University track & field program's two-day trip to the NCAA Championships, hosted by Pittsburg State University at the Robert W. Plaster Center. It was the first career All-America performance for each student-athlete.
Arlabosse had the highest finish of the weekend for the Ravens, as he competed in the 800 meters. In Friday's preliminaries, he took to the track in the first of three heats, which wound up being the slowest of the three. With qualifying spots in the final awarded to the top two finishers in each heat, plus the next two fastest times, Arlabosse took second in his heat, with a time of 1:52.90, which was actually the slowest of all eight qualifiers.
Arlabosse was able to move up the ladder in Saturday's final though, as he was more than two seconds faster, at 1:50.41. He climbed two spots over the final 300 meters to rally for a fifth-place finish.
For her part, Telfer was in action in both the 60-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Championships. In the hurdles, she ran in the second of two heats. Automatic qualifying spots in the final were available only to the heat winners, with the next six fastest times also advancing. Telfer placed second in her heat, with a time of 8.38 seconds, which was the third-fastest qualifying mark of the day. In Saturday's final, Telfer was just a couple tenths slower, at 8.57 seconds, to finish sixth.
In the 200-meter dash, Telfer ran in the second of five heats, with qualifying spots available for the eight fastest times overall, and no automatic qualifiers. Telfer finished third in her heat, at 24.46 seconds, to finish 12th in the event overall, though she did not qualify for the final. The 12th-place finish will be good enough for All-America Second Team honors, to go with the First Team accolades in the 60-meter hurdles.
Freshman Paola Brena (Queretaro, Mexico) was also in Kansas to represent the Ravens, as she took part in Saturday's high jump. Though she was tied for 15th in the country entering the event, Brena was unable to clear the opening height of 1.63 meters.
The Ravens are scheduled to open the outdoor season on Saturday, March 23 at the UTA Bobby Lane Invitational, hosted by the University of Texas at Arlington, in Arlington, Texas.
