Carvalho, Men's Tennis Conclude Play at ITA East Regionals

FLUSHING, N.Y. (September 20, 2021) – Members of the Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team wrapped up play at the ITA East Regionals Tournament that lasted from Friday, September 17 through Sunday, September 18. The men's team posted a 4-4 record in singles play and a 1-2 record in doubles.

Sophomore Ivan Bernal (Madrid, Spain), graduate students Felipe Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Kevin Denecheau (Artigueloutan, France) and senior Preston Gordon (Essex Junction, Vt.) all competed in singles competition, while senior Nkrumah Patrick (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago) and juniors Joshua Arnold (Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago), Paul McLellan (Nairobi, Kenya) and Alejandro Ortiz (Madrid, Spain) all competed in doubles competition.

In the first round of singles play, Denecheau, third-ranked Carvalho and 12th-ranked Bernal were able to advance to the second round. Denecheau defeated Trent Newman of Stonehill 6-2, 6-2, while No. 3 Carvalho downed No. 4 Lennart Lehmann of St. Thomas Aquinas 6-1, 7-5. No. 12 Bernal earned a 6-3, 7-6 win over Alan Nguyen of Assumption.

After the second round of singles competition, No. 3 Carvalho was the lone Raven to advance to the quarterfinals round on Saturday after defeating his opponent Oscar Serra from USciences 6-1, 6-1, before falling to No. 11 Kaeper Piekarek of LeMoyne in the quarterfinals to a final score of 6-3, 7-6(6).

During doubles competition, the duo of Patrick and Ortiz defeated Zachary Duboulay and Cade Nadeau of Southern New Hampshire 8-4, in the first round to move on to the second round. There, the pair James Howard and Jared Howard of LeMoyne defeated Patrick and Ortiz 8-4.
