Men’s Tennis Deals with Assumption, 7-0

RINDGE, N.H. (April 18, 2019) – The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team halted a three-match Northeast-10 Conference losing streak on Thursday afternoon, by dispatching Assumption, 7-0, on Franklin Pierce's home courts.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 10-8 (4-3 NE10), while Assumption falls to 2-16 (2-7 NE10). With two matches to play, the Ravens now sit fifth in the NE10 standings, with six teams qualifying for the NE10 Championship. Franklin Pierce can clinch its second straight postseason berth with a win in either of its final two matches, or a loss by Adelphi in its lone remaining league match.

Franklin Pierce picked up wins in two of Thursday's three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At second doubles, it was a 6-1 win for junior Yuval Barak (Zicron Ya'akov, Israel) and freshman Preston Gordon (Essex Junction, Vt.) over Assumption freshmen Jacob Lawrence and Michael Butkus. At third doubles, seniors Andrew Schadt (Tolland, Conn.) and Marcus Lawrence (Acton, Mass.) blanked sophomore Luke Whitehouse and freshman Kevin Wicks, 6-0.

The lone win of the day for Assumption came at first doubles, where senior Reb Mariano and freshman Brandon Sze were able to slip past sophomores Roberto Chong (Puigpunyent, Spain) and Nkrumah Patrick (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago), 6-4.

Franklin Pierce then took all six singles matches as well, to complete the 7-0 shutout. The only three-set match of the bunch came at second singles, where Gordon dropped the first set before rallying past Sze, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. At the other end of the spectrum, the Ravens posted a pair of singles shutouts: Patrick blanked Jacob Lawrence at third singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Schadt did the same to Whitehouse at fifth singles.

Elsewhere, Chong took care of Mariano at first singles, 6-1, 6-3. Barak picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Butkus at fourth singles. Lastly, Marcus Lawrence notched a 6-2, 6-0 win over Wicks at sixth singles.

The Ravens return to the court on Thursday, April 25, when they travel to Stonehill for an NE10 match at 3:30 p.m. in Easton, Mass.
