Men’s Tennis Opens Spring Season with 6-1 Win at Saint Michael’s

COLCHESTER, Vt. (February 9, 2019) – The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis got the spring portion of its season opened in style on Saturday afternoon, with a productive trip to Vermont. The Ravens picked up a 6-1 win over Saint Michael's in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 4-1 (3-0 NE10), while Saint Michael's falls to 2-4 (1-1 NE10).

The only point of the day for Saint Michael's came via default at sixth singles, as Franklin Pierce fielded a lineup of just five players. The Ravens also defaulted at third doubles, but they would win every match which was actually played on Saturday.

At first doubles, it was a 6-2 win for sophomores Roberto Chong (Puigpunyent, Spain) and Nkrumah Patrick (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago) over Saint Michael's seniors Dan Foley and Max Allen. Freshman Preston Gordon (Essex Junction, Vt.) and junior Yuval Barak (Zicron Ya'akov, Israel) wrapped up the doubles point with an identical, 6-2 victory at second doubles, over sophomore Colby Antonacci and junior Matt Mosher.

Franklin Pierce then rolled to five singles victories as well, as they dropped just nine games along the way. It was a clean sweep at first singles for Chong, who blanked Foley, 6-0, 6-0. Gordon chalked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Allen and second singles. At third singles, Patrick took care of Mosher with ease, 6-1, 6-0. Barak notched a 6-1, 6-2 win at fourth singles, over Antonacci. Finally, senior Andrew Schadt (Tolland, Conn.) dispatched freshman Ivan Llona at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-1.

The Ravens return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 16, when they travel to Babson for a non-conference match at 4 p.m. in Wellesley, Mass.
