#13 Adelphi Snaps Ravens Win Streak, Win 2-0

GARDEN CITY, N.J. (October 20, 2018) – The Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team six-game win streak came to an end Saturday evening after no 13. nationally-ranked Adelphi University shutout the Ravens 2-0 during Northeast-10 Conference action on Motamed Field. With the win, the Panthers improve to 12-2-1, 10-1-0 NE10 while the Ravens move to 7-8-0, 6-5-0 NE10.

The Ravens offense had plenty of opportunities in the match as they nearly doubled up the hosts in shot attempts (26-to-14). Half of the Pierce shot attempts (13) were on goal compared to only seven for the Panthers. FPU also held the edge in corner kicks 6-to-0.

FPU almost broke through in the scoring column early on in the contest. Sophomore midfielder Cole Neily (Litchfield, N.H.) rifled a shot attempt that was collected by Panthers netminder Matt Apicella just 12 minutes into the battle. Classmate Kidino Jones (Ocho Rios, Jamaica) followed three minutes later with a high shot that was off the mark.

In the 29th minute, Adelphi took the lead for good when Paolo Marciano chipped a pass towards the center of the box. The loose ball was collected by James Thristino who fired a shot high into the top corner of the cage for his first marker of the campaign.

Trailing 1-0 with five minutes left before the break, Yannik Felber (Vallendar, Germany) nearly deadlocked the match as he almost cashed in a one-on-one chance at the penalty marker. Apicella sprawled out and made a diving save towards the post to keep his squad ahead.

John Aydogan added an insurance tally in the 64th minute by rocketing a shot 15 yards out, high corner at the near post.

Pierce kept peppering Apicella with shots, but he would not bend making 13 saves in his 12th win of the season. Raven keeper Jadel Poon-Lewis (Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago) stopped five shots in the setback.

The Ravens return home on Tuesday for their senior day contest against NE10 opponent American International College at 7:00 p.m.
