Madden’s Double OT Header Sends Ravens to Semifinals

RINDGE, N.H. (November 1, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team showed some flair for the dramatic in their one regular season contest against Southern New Hampshire University and the Ravens clutch gene appeared yet again this time during the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals as Charlie Madden (Newton Abbott, United Kingdom) headed home the game winner 12 minutes into extra time which gave the Ravens a 2-1 double overtime victory against the Penmen on Tuesday evening.

With the loss, the defending champion Penmen season ends at 11-4-2 and the fourth seeded Ravens (12-4-0) campaign continues in the NE-10 Semifinals on Friday at the one seed, Adelphi (15-1-1) with kickoff TBA. This is the first time Pierce has advanced to the league semis since 2013.

In their only meeting this season at Sodexo Field, the Panthers clawed past the Ravens 1-0 with Diego Zuniga scoring the lone tally for Adelphi. However, Pierce severely outshot the guests by a 25-8 margin.

Madden also made a clutch save during the first overtime period. In the 92nd minute, Enzo Giuliani had a wide open net because Jadel Poon-Lewis (Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago) played a deflected pass. Giuliani then rifled a shot into the open bottom right of the net, but Madden moved over a few inches and blocked the shot attempt from entering the cage, which kept the Ravens chances alive until he ended the contest 10 minutes later.

Madden's marker came off a free kick about 30 yards out by team captain Hamish Cadigan (Christchurch, New Zealand) after a Penmen foul. The ball exploded off Cadigan's foot and flew high into the left side of the box right onto the head of Madden. The rock ricocheted off the defender's dome past SNHU goalie Nick Zucco into the cage. Madden's teammates mobbed him on the field in celebration following the goal.

FPU trailed early in the contest as SNHU's Enzo Giuliani opened the games scoring with his eighth goal of the season on a one-timer from teammate Ryan Simpson to put the guests up 1-0 eight minutes in.

Jordan Barnett (Grimsby, England) drew the equalizer in the 23rd minute with a header off a corner kick by Jacob Blixt (Borrby, Sweden).

Both squads had many scoring chances throughout the remainder of regulation, but most of them either went high, wide or were saved by each squad's goalkeepers.

Jadel Poon-Lewis stopped five shots in the win, his 11th of the season. Nick Zucco took the loss, finished 10-4-2 on the season and made eight saves in the setback.
