Ravens see season end in Nutmeg State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (November 4, 2014) – SCSU sophomore midfielder Markus Jacobsen scored three times on Tuesday afternoon, as the seventh-seeded Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of second-seeded Southern Connecticut State in the quarterfinal round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship at Jess Dow Field. Freshman goalkeeper Noah Varonier made four saves to record the shutout for SCSU.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce sees its season draw to a close at 9-7-1. SCSU improves to 14-3 and advances to Friday's semifinal round of the Northeast-10 Championship, against the winner of Tuesday night's contest between third-seeded Adelphi and sixth-seeded Le Moyne.

The goals came early and often for SCSU on Tuesday afternoon. The Owls opened the scoring in the 16th minute and never looked back. Junior forward Daquan King crossed the ball into the middle from the right side and freshman forward Chae Brangman headed it down and inside the left post for his sixth goal of the season. It was the first of two assists on the afternoon for King.

Jacobsen would add two more goals before halftime to send the Owls into the break with a 3-0 lead. In the 27th minute, Brangman made it a three-point day by setting up the sixth of the season for Jacobsen. The ball fell at the right foot of the latter, who put it inside the far post to make it 2-0. In the 34th minute, the ball wound up on Jacobsen's right foot at the top of the six-yard box, off a feed from sophomore midfielder Christian Samaniego. Again, Jacobsen finished inside the far post for his second goal of the day.

The Owls tacked on a pair of insurance markers in the second half to create the 5-0 final. In the 68th minute, King notched his second assist by sending the ball into the penalty area for sophomore midfielder Ignacio Navarro. Navarro collected the feed 10 yards from goal and put a shot inside the right post for his second goal of the year. Jacobsen capped the scoring in the 72nd minute with his third of the game and eighth of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Jordan LeGuyader (Jersey, United Kingdom) finished with four saves in net and took the loss (8-5-1) for Franklin Pierce. Varonier stopped all four shots on his goal to pick up the win (14-3-0) and tally his seventh shutout of the season.
