Corday Goal in OT Lifts Men's Soccer to 1-0 Triumph over Assumption

Only shot attempt of the night for Corday

RINDGE, N.H. (September 28, 2013) – Freshman Justin Corday (Somerset, Bermuda) struck home the game-winning goal with a little more than three minutes remaining in the first overtime to lift the Franklin Pierce University men’s soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 triumph over Assumption on Saturday night at Sodexo Field in Rindge. The Ravens won their second straight to even their record at 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Greyhounds dipped to 2-3-2 and 0-3-2 in league play.

Corday’s marker was the first of his collegiate career and capped a solid offensive night for Franklin Pierce, which fired off 15 shots, putting seven on net. The Ravens held the pace of play in Assumption’s zone for most of the night, but could not get the go-ahead marker until Corday’s boot in the 97th minute.

The play started with a mad scramble for a loose ball in front of the goal that bounced off several players before Corday could get his foot on it, sending a strike to the lower center portion of the net that caused an explosion of celebration from the Franklin Pierce bench.

It was Corday’s lone attempt of the night, and just his third shot of the season. Classmate Pedro Espindola (Sao Paulo, Brazil) logged a match-high four shots with two going on goal. Freshman forward Dallas Donovan (South Yarmouth, Mass.) followed with three shots.

Assumption keeper Dana King took the loss, but it was hardly his fault as he was outstanding making six saves, including several of the diving variety.

Franklin Pierce keeper Sam Meza (Whittier, Calif.) was more than up to the task in his net as well. The Greyhounds managed just five shots in the match, but put four of those on net, causing Meza to be on top of his game all night. Meza’s finest moment came on an outstanding diving save to his right early in the first half to keep the match scoreless, and avoid allowing Assumption to gain any sort of momentum.

Meza has been asked to stand tall in goal over the last two matches, with both being 1-0 triumphs in extra time. He also made a career-high nine saves in 105 minutes of action last Saturday as the Ravens scored in the second overtime to pull out the victory at American International. Meza ran his record to 3-3 on the year, with all three victories coming via shutout.

Franklin Pierce returns to action Wednesday when the Ravens travel to Waltham, Mass. to take on Bentley at 3:30 p.m. The contest will be a rematch of last season’s NE-10 quarterfinal match, which the Ravens won – at Bentley – by a 3-0 margin.
