No. 24 Franklin Pierce Holds Off Stonehill, 3-1

McDermott records a goal and an assist to spark Ravens

EASTON, Mass. (Sept. 5, 2001) - The Franklin Pierce men's soccer team, ranked No. 24 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, posted a 3-1 victory over Stonehill College in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both at Chieftain Stadium this afternoon.

Junior forward David McDermott (Merseyside, England/Saint Mary's) knocked in his own rebound at 3:38 to give Franklin Pierce a quick lead, then assisted on sophomore Bjorgolfer Takefusa's (Reykjavik, Iceland/Vt.-Business) gamewinning blast 1:12 later.

The two sides were scoreless through the rest of the first half and Stonehill cut its deficit in half when freshman Andrew McKay converted an assist from sophomore Matt Stone at 74:34.

The Ravens added an insurance goal less than five minutes later as senior Chris Schwarz (Babenhausen, Germany/Viktoria Aschaffenburg) one-timed a cross from sophomore Felix Brilliant (Montreal, Quebec/College Francais) at 79:08.

Senior goalkeeper Chris Hughes (Lenzie, Scotland/Lenzie Academy) earned his second win in goal this season as he recorded four saves for Franklin Pierce. Stonehill junior Dan Niedringhaus registered ten stops in just over 85-minutes of play, before giving way to classmate Brian Wietecha who totaled no saves.

Franklin Pierce (2-0, 1-0 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday, when it travels to Worchester, Mass., to face Assumption College in an NE-10 battle at 1 p.m. Stonehill (2-1, 0-1 NE-10) returns to action on Sunday for a Conference battle at Saint Anselm College at 1 p.m.
