Franklin Pierce Tops No. 23 Mercyhurst in Overtime

Travis Goal Lifts Ravens to Victory

ERIE, Pa. (Sept. 14, 2001) - Junior midfielder Tate Travis (Detroit, Mich./UC Santa Barbara) netted the lone goal of the match 8:27 into overtime to lift Franklin Pierce to a 1-0 victory over Mercyhurst College, ranked No. 23 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II Coaches poll, in a non-conference men's soccer match this afternoon.

Travis took a feed from senior forwardErnest Olius (Hillside, N.J./Essex CC) and pushed it past Mercyhurst goalkeeper Matt Sullivan after the two sides played through a scoreless regulation.

Mercyhurst outshot the Ravens by a 9-7 margin for the match and had a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. Nine cautions and two ejections marred the match.

Senior goalkeeper Chris Hughes (Lenzie, Scotland/Lenzie Academy) recorded two saves for his first shutout of the season (third career) for Franklin Pierce. Sullivan also totaled two stops.

Franklin Pierce (3-1, 1-1 NE-10) returns to action on Sunday, in Erie, Pa., when they face Gannon University at noon. Mercyhurst falls to 3-1 with the loss.
