Franklin Pierce Wins Hamot Classic With 3-2 Victory Over Gannon

Olius Nets Gamewinner at 7:31 of Overtime

ERIE, Pa. (Sept. 16, 2001) - Senior forward Ernest Olius (Hillside, N.J./Essex CC) netted an unassisted goal 7:31 into overtime to lead Franklin Pierce to a 3-2 victory over Gannon University at the Hamot Classic this afternoon.

The win claims the Hamot Classic Title for Franklin Pierce as they were the lone team to post a 2-0 mark in the four-school event. The Ravens posted a 1-0 overtime victory at No. 23 Mercyhurst College on Friday.

Olius scored the winning goal by breaking the Gannon defense and deking past goalkeeper Matt Angelo (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) to score into an empty net.

After the two sides played through a scoreless first half, Franklin Pierce broke through for the first goal of the match as sophomoreBjorgolfer Takefusa (Roykjavik, Iceland/Vt.-Business) took a through ball from senior Pat Teague (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) and took a shot that deflected off Angelo's hand into the goal at 48:51.

Gannon answered at 54:28 as Gretar Sveinsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskoliu) set up Sean Riley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston), who headed the cross past Franklin Pierce goalkeeperChris Hughes (Lenzie, Scotland/Lenzie Academy).

The Ravens answered just 2:12 later as Takefusa scored his second goal of the match on a breakaway set up by junior Tate Travis (Detroit, Mich./UC Santa Barbara).

Riley scored the equalizer for the Golden Knights with just 10:25 left in regulation off another pass from Sveinsson, sending the match to overtime.

Hughes recorded four saves for Franklin Pierce, while Angelo notched nine stops for Gannon, who drops to 1-4 on the season.

Franklin Pierce (4-1, 1-1 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday, when they host No. 19 Saint Anselm College in a key Northeast-10 Conference battle at 3:30 p.m.
