Bryant Stuns Franklin Pierce, 1-0
Ravens fail to score despite 15-9 shots advantage
SMITHFIELD, R.I. (September 29, 2001) - Freshman goalkeeper James Purpura recorded nine saves to post his first career shutout and lead Bryant College to a 1-0 win over Franklin Pierce in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer action at Bulldog Stadium this afternoon.
Sophomore Clint Stonacek's goal just 7:58 into the match held up over the final 82-minutes. His blast from 15-yards out deflected off Raven goalkeeper Dominico Roma (Windsor, Ontario/Ste. Annes) and an Franklin Pierce defender into the back of the net.
The Ravens threatened just more than a minute later, but Purpura smothered a Bjorgolfer Takefusa (Reykjavik, Iceland/Vt.-Business) shot. The Bulldog keeper made a similar effort on Franklin Pierce's Ernest Olius (Hillside, N.J./Essex CC) with 10:30 left in the first half.
Franklin Pierce outshot Bryant by a 15-9 margin, but could not find the back of the net. Roma finished with a season-high six saves in goal for the Ravens.
