Franklin Pierce Men's Soccer Team Unable to Solve Owls

Southern Conn. Deals Ravens 2-0 Loss

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Oct. 21, 2000) - The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team sandwiched a pair of goals around halftime Saturday during a 2-0 Northeast-10 Conference win over Franklin Pierce.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Ravens (11-4, 8-3 NE-10) and put their standing atop the regional Division II rankings in jeopardy.

Southern (9-3-3, 9-1-1 NE-10) has now won four straight as they try to get back to the NCAA Division II tournament to defend their national title.

The Owls outshot the Ravens, 12-9, and got their goals in the 37th minute when Bonaventure Maruti (Nairobi, Kenya) broke down the left wing, drew the final Franklin Pierce defender and dished off to Avi Scabini (Nentanya, Israel), who was wide open in front of the net. The goal was Scabini's 10th of the year.

Maruti netted his team-high 11th goal three minutes into the second half when he took a long chip pass from Ofer Holtz and held off a defender as he turned and booted a shot into the upper 90. The Ravens tried to mount an attack late in the game, moving 6-foot-5 defender Paul Lindsay (Edinburgh, Scotland) to the front line, but to no avail.

Rob Scholz (Schenectady, N.Y.) made 10 saves for the Ravens, including a couple of stellar stops late in the game to keep things interesting.
