HOOKSETT, N.H. (April 3, 2021) – For the second consecutive meeting, the Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse program rallied from a late deficit scoring the final four goals of the contest to defeat the Franklin Pierce University Ravens 14-13 in double overtime Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Penmen Stadium. With the win, the Penmen improve to 3-2, 3-2 NE10 while the Ravens remain winless at 0-4, 0-4 NE10.

The Ravens were behind 8-6 at the break. They outscored the Penmen 7-2 over the final 28 minutes of regulation until the home squad tallied three goals in the last two minutes to send the contest into sudden-death overtime.

Pierce was led by sophomore midfielder Sean Daly (Kingston, Mass.) who scored two goals and chipped in two assists. Freshman attack Connor McCormack (Hampstead, N.H.) tallied two goals and one assist while sophomore attack Caleb Ikkela (Onset, Mass.) paced the Crimson and Grey with three scores. In net, freshman James Heitmiller (Nashua, N.H.) took the loss making 16 saves in the defeat.

For SNHU, David Wiedenfeld collected the game-winning goal in overtime, his second game-winner in as many meetings against the Ravens finishing the contest with two goals and two assists. Cole Jacobsen had a five point effort tallying three goals and two assists.

Trailing 8-6 at the intermission the Ravens came all the way back to tie the game 9-9 with freshman midfielder Conor Rooney's (Wilmington, Mass.) eighth goal of the season with 2:28 to play in the third. SNHU regained the brief lead until a Daly tally tied the game.

About 1:45 into the fourth and final quarter graduate long stick midfielder Mackenzie Pace (Swanzey, N.H.) found teammate McCormack for the marker to push Pierce ahead 11-10. A minute passed as Daly put home his second goal in as many minutes to regain the multiple-goal advantage at 12-10 with 12:46 to play. Franklin Pierce kept attacking SNHU in the defensive zone and it resulted in another score at the 7:50 mark off the shot of junior attack Patrick Mulhern (Pembroke, Mass.) to move ahead 13-10.

With two minutes and change to go, SNHU did not waiver and tied the game 13-13 on the strength of three consecutive goals, the final via Chris Valentine. 9.1 seconds remained and the Ravens drove down the other end of the field for one last shot, however, Daly's shot went wide of the mark as the game headed to a sudden-death overtime.

Pierce won the faceoff in overtime and sophomore midfielder Nathaniel Girardin's (Brunswick, Maine) shot attempt was stifled by the Penmen netminder. The Ravens corralled the loose ball with Daly receiving the rock. He drove the right-wing and his runner hit the post. SNHU gobbled up the ball, successfully cleared the possession, and called a timeout.

SNHU ran their offense and they were eventually turned away by junior defender Robert Colburn (Walpole, Mass.) who jarred the ball loose from Valentine. FPU completed the clear and had three chances for the game-winning score, but all three attempts were wide. They maintained possession and called a timeout of their own with 1:27 left in the free quarter.

FPU kept moving the ball around the horn and with around 45 seconds to play in the first OT, Rooney's shot was saved and cleared out by SNHU. On the other end, Wiedenfeld was also stifled as the horn sounded as the game went into a second overtime.

In the second overtime, SNHU was victorious in the faceoff and immediately called timeout. They eventually turned the ball over after a Tim Krutz shot but retained possession thanks to a Pierce turnover. SNHU the lost the ball which resulted in a fast break chance for Pierce and McCormack. McCormack roped a shot from the top of the point that was picked by the Penmen goalie. On the other end, SNHU cleared the possession and Wiedenfeld walked off the game with 2:22 left in double OT for the 14-13 Penmen win.
