Castorf Becomes 2nd All-Time Leading Goal Scorer as Ravens Rally Falls Short Versus #2 Adelphi

RINDGE, N.H. (April 23, 2019) – Trailing 8-4 heading into the fourth and final quarter, the Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse team scored two goals to pull within two before falling 8-6 to no. 2 nationally-ranked and Northeast-10 Conference opponent Adelphi University Tuesday afternoon on Sodexo Field. With the loss, the Crimson and Grey complete their year at 5-8, 3-8 NE10 and the Panthers head into the conference championship at 15-1, 10-1 NE10.

In his final career game, senior midfielder Jake Castorf (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored a game-best three goals giving him 90 total passing former teammate Sean Delea's mark of 88 for second all-time in team annals. He also finished second in program history in points (136) and assists (46).

The Ravens forced their counterparts into 25 turnovers on the day including eight by leading point-getter Ian Kirby. Their defense locked down the Panthers high powered scoring attack to a season-low eight goals matching their previous low of eight in their 10-8 setback to nationally-ranked Le Moyne on April 13th.

Senior attack Matt Brewster (Merrimack, N.H.) chipped in two goals for the Ravens. Freshman Stephen Ell (Peabody, Mass.) added the other marker while senior attack Luke Tracy (Windham, N.H.) tallied an assist. Senior goalkeeper Brian Schiavi (Dracut, Mass.) made seven saves in the setback.

For Adelphi, Nicolas Racalbuto scored twice as did Quintin McKenna. Netminder Brendan McDougal collected his 15th win of the year and 10 saves.

Adelphi netted the opening goal, a Kirby to Angelo Caiazzo connection four minutes into the game. A couple of seconds later, Brewster deadlocked the game 1-1 when he forced a turnover, picked up the loose ball and fired a shot into the open net. The Panthers moved ahead 2-1 at the 10:37 mark off a shot by Michael Paccione.

Midway through the second, Castorf manufactured the equalizer halfway through the period pushing home an attempt in traffic just outside the top of the crease. Adelphi answered with three straight goals to end the period and had a 5-2 advantage at the break.

In the third quarter, Racalbuto poured in two straight goals to expand the lead to 7-2. Ell pulled the Ravens within four, pumping in an attempt right of the crease at the 10-minute mark. The Panther lead grew back to five, 8-3 until Castorf scored an unassisted tally cutting the deficit to 8-4.

The Ravens attempted a comeback bid in the fourth scoring twice two minutes apart. Castorf made it an 8-5 contest burying a sideways shot after running around the back of the cage. Tracy fed Brewster from behind the net bringing the margin to 8-6. Pierce kept battling putting many shots on the net especially in the final minute when they called timeouts to draw up plays, but they could not score again in the ballgame.
