Men’s Lacrosse Obliterates Post 15-0, Records First Shutout Win in Program History

WATERBURY, Conn. (March 3, 2019) – Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse seniors Matt Brewster (Merrimack, N.H.) and Luke Tracy (Windham, N.H.) scored four goals and chipped in one assist each as the Ravens dominated Post University 15-0 in the Ravens season opener Sunday at LaMoy Field.

The win, the only shutout win in men's lacrosse program history moves FPU to 1-0 following the first game. The Eagles fall to 1-2 overall with the setback. The Ravens 15 goal margin of victory is the fourth highest in team annals matching an 18-3 Pierce win versus the now defunct Daniel Webster College on April 12, 2004. The Ravens previous low for goals allowed in a single game was one during a 22-1 victory at the hands of Green Mountain College on April 26, 2006.

Brewster scooped up two groundballs and tallied one caused turnover in the win while Tracy shagged one loose ball. Team captain Jake Castorf (Holbrook, N.Y.) recorded two goals and two assists for four points upping his career goal total to 60 and his career point mark to 95. He is five points away from becoming the seventh member of the teams 100 point club.

In their first games as Ravens, graduate midfielder Domenic St. Laurent (Amherst, N.H.) manufactured one goal and a game-high three assists and freshman attack Patrick Mulhern (Pembroke, Mass.) dumped home his first ever goal on a man advantage just minutes into the fourth quarter.

Sophomore netminder Justin Lorenzo (Goshen, N.Y.) drew the start in net for Pierce and stopped all eight shot attempts he faced in 48:22 minutes. Senior keeper Brian Schiavi (Dracut, Mass.) and freshman Nathan Taylor (Danville, N.H.) entered the game late with Schiavi making two saves. Post goalie Manuele D'Alessio recorded 13 saves in the setback.

Pierce outshot their counterparts 55-to-18 snagged 24 groundballs compared to the Post 17 and took care of the ball racking up only 15 turnovers with the Eagles committing 27 miscues.

Castorf began the Ravens season with a marker on their opening possession when he fired a shot on the right while taking an unnecessary roughness penalty. Post's first real scoring attempt came after dual penalties called on the Ravens. Corey Auten had a clean look at the cage at the 7:19 mark, but Lorenzo snared the ball out of midair keeping his squad ahead 1-0. A couple of minutes later, St. Laurent cradled the ball at the top and rifled a pass to Tracy right outside the crease on the right side. Tracy put home the one-timer to expand the Ravens lead to 2-0. St. Laurent connected with sophomore midfielder Josh Dorr (Brunswick, Maine) with 2:01 to play to up the Raven edge to 3-0 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

Post started the second quarter with possession but could not come up with a shot due to the swarming Raven defense and they were called for a shot clock violation. Brewster increased the Raven lead to 4-0 punching home a shot in the middle at the boundary of the crease. Castorf tallied his second goal of the half stepping in on the right and roping a sidearm shot to move Pierce ahead 5-0. A Lorenzo save of a Carlos Chacua shot attempt led to a successful clear for FPU. The Ravens had numbers and Brewster dished off a feed to Tracy in front for his second marker upping the Raven advantage to 6-0 with 3:22 left in the half. Tracy capped off his first half "hat-trick" and St. Laurent scored his first goal as a Raven with three seconds left to give the guests an 8-0 halftime lead.

In the first half, the Crimson and Gray outshot the Eagles 28-to-7. The third quarter started with a man-up opportunity for Pierce. Dorr and Brewster teamed up for FPU's season-opening "up" goal to move the margin to 9-0. Tracy and Brewster totaled the next three goals giving their squad a 12-0 third-quarter edge.

Mulhern, sophomore midfielder Mike Alibrandi (Holliston, Mass.) and Colin Doherty (Reading, Mass.) capped off the Raven scoring in the fourth quarter completing the shutout.

The Ravens open their home schedule on Saturday when they welcome non-conference opponent Dominican (N.Y.) College to Sodexo Field for a 12:00 p.m. showdown.
