Carney Records 100th Career Point, Assumption Stifles Franklin Pierce in Second Half

RINDGE, N.H.  (April 7, 2018) – Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse senior attack Jack Carney (Dunbarton, N.H.) became the sixth member of the programs 100-point club as the Ravens were undone by Assumption College's second-half scoring blitz in a 12-7 setback during Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field Saturday. With the win, the Greyhounds race out to 6-2, 4-2 NE10 while the Ravens fall to 4-4, 2-4 NE10.

Following a faceoff win by Louis Palumbo (Commack, N.Y.), Carney set up on the left side just outside the crease. Palumbo raced down the field and pitched the ball to his open teammate who deposited a shot to push the Ravens ahead 4-3 in the second quarter. The goal, his only of the game gives him an even 100 career points and he needs only four more to move into the top-five.

Jake Castorf (Holbrook, N.Y.) paced the Crimson and Grey's offense with two goals. Sean Delea (Hampstead, N.H.) tacked on two points of his own by scoring a marker and assisting on another. Freshman James Conway (Queensbury, N.Y.) notched his first career goal while freshman defender Luke Newman (Bethel, Conn.) scooped up four groundballs. Starting goalkeeper Justin Lorenzo (Goshen, N.Y.) stopped a career-high 19 shots in the loss.

For Assumption, junior attack Dan Farrell led the way with a seven-point, five goal and two assist effort. Teammate Travis Reid tacked on four goals and one helper while Connor Reid won 14-of-23 (60.8%) of faceoffs shagging a game-best eight groundballs in the process. Netminder Colby Hamwey saved 11 shots.

Castorf gave the Ravens their first edge in the showdown by punching home a low running sidewinding attempt just outside the right of the crease. 50 seconds later, Trevor Kennedy answered with a runner of his own to tie the contest at one. At the 6:50 mark, Delea sniped home a shot high cheddar to regain the lead towards the Franklin Pierce side at 2-1, but the Greyhounds brought the score to a deadlock again as Farrell, behind the crease ripped a fall-away into the net to cap the first quarter scoring.

Franklin Pierce's Nevin Kriger (Burlington, Mass.) pushed his squad back ahead 3-2 just three minutes into the new quarter. The freshman midfielder converted a spinning snipe a few yards out until Assumption immediately tied up the game yet again. Carney's score and Castorf's second of the game moved the Ravens ahead 5-3. However, the Greyhounds offense exploded for six consecutive goals while their defensive unit held the Ravens to no goals as they jumped in front 9-5 after three periods.

A Delea and Josh Dorr (Brunswick, Maine) connection brought the Ravens deficit down to three, 9-6, but Assumption continued to tack on tallies to eventually win 12-7.

The Ravens head out on the road Wednesday to no. 2 nationally-ranked Merrimack for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
