Men's Lacrosse Hangs Tough But Comes Up Just Short in 15-7 Decision at Saint Michael's
Ravens hold halftime lead, but can't hang on in tough loss; Scanlan scores three times to pace Ravens offensive attack
COLCHESTER, Vt. (April 7, 2010) -- The Franklin Pierce
University men's lacrosse team battled hard Wednesday after dropped
a tough 15-7 decision to Saint Michael's in Colchester, Vt. The
Ravens dropped their third-straight game in falling to 4-3 overall
and 1-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference. St. Mike's improved to 3-4
and 2-2 in league play.
Franklin Pierce scored the game's first two goals and built a 4-3
lead at halftime, but the Purple Knights countered the first half
deficit by outscoring the Ravens, 12-3, in the second half to pull
away for the victory.
Junior midfielder John Scanlan (Great Neck, N.Y.)
scored a team-high three goals for Franklin Pierce, while freshman
Brendan Cahill (Hollis, N.H.) added a pair of
tallies. Nate Wood (Binghamton, N.Y.) and
Jimmy McInnis (Amherst, N.H.) each notched a goal
as well.
Junior goalkeeper Shea Campbell (Centerport,
N.Y.) made 14 saves and allowed 15 goals in suffering the
loss to fall to 4-3 on the season.
Charlie Niznansky tallied four goals for St. Mike's, while Peter
Hanson scored three times. Zach Jandl started in goal and got the
win as he made 10 saves, while allowing seven goals.
McInnis got the scoring started with a goal three-and-a-half
minutes into the game, and Scanlan followed with a tally of his own
at the 9:45 mark to put the Ravens on top 2-0.
Saint Michael's got a late goal in the first period to pull within
one, but the Ravens answered with another score early in the second
period to go up 3-1 after Scanlan deposited a shot in the back of
the net for his second marker of the game.
The Purple Knights sandwiched a pair of goals around Scanlan's
third tally in the later stages of the second period to pull within
4-3 at halftime.
Niznansky knotted the game at 4-4 just 25 seconds into the third
period, but Franklin Pierce was quick to answer with a pair of
goals from Wood and Cahill to go up 6-4 with 10:18 left in the
stanza.
The Ravens were looking to pull out their second road win of the
season, but it wasn't to be as Saint Michael's rallied to score
eight-straight goals, bridging the third and fourth periods, to
open up a 12-6 advantage. Cahill stopped the barrage of goals with
one of his own midway through fourth, but the Purple Knights closed
out the final minutes with three more goals to seal the win.
Franklin Pierce returns to action next Tuesday when it plays host
to Southern New Hampshire at 7 p.m. in Sodexo Field.
