Men's Lacrosse Improves to 3-0 With 8-6 Win at Mercy
Scanlan scores team-high three goals; Cahill scores twice and assists on three others for a five-point afternoon
PURCHASE, N.Y. (March 18, 2010) -- The Franklin
Pierce University men's lacrosse team ran its record to 3-0 in the
young 2010 season after downing Mercy, 8-6, on Thursday afternoon
in Purchase, N.Y. Mercy fell to 1-4 on the season.
Junior midfielder John Scanlan (Great Neck, N.Y.)
paced the Franklin Pierce offensive attack as he scored three
goals, while freshman Brendan Cahill (Hollis,
N.H.) had a five-point afternoon with two goals and three
assists. Nate Wood (Binghamton, N.Y.) also added
two goals for the Ravens in the win.
Mike Marzocca scored three times for Mercy in the setback.
Franklin Pierce scored the first three goals of the game and four
overall in the first period to take a 4-1 advantage. Wood scored
the first goal and Scanlan tallied two a little more than two
minutes apart to stake the Ravens to the early 3-0 lead. Wood got
his second goal of the period with 1:23 remaining.
Mercy scored the second period's first and last goal, but
sandwiched between those two tallies were three goals from the
Ravens, including markers from Jimmy McInnis (Amherst,
N.H.), Scanlan and Cahill. Franklin Pierce held a 7-3 lead
at halftime.
Marzocca and Cahill traded a goal each in the third period.
Cahill's tally came with just :06 remaining and gave Franklin
Pierce an 8-4 lead after 45 minutes.
Mercy scored twice in the fourth period, but it wasn't enough to
complete the comeback.
Shea Campbell (Centerport, N.Y.) made nine saves
in goal to earn the win for Franklin Pierce and improve to 3-0 on
the season.
Franklin Pierce returns to action on Wednesday when it plays host
to American International in Sodexo Field at 4 p.m. The game will
be the Northeast-10 opener for the Ravens.
