Assumption Puts Away Franklin Pierce, 15-7

RINDGE, N.H. (April 26,
2008) – The Assumption College men’s lacrosse
team scored eight of the game’s last 10 goals as the
Greyhounds pulled away from Franklin Pierce University in the
second half for a 15-7 Northeast-10 Conference victory on Senior
Day at Sodexho Field on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Brandon MacNeil (Surrey, B.C./Delta Secondary) was one of
five Greyhounds to find the net twice on the afternoon, leading a
balanced Assumption attack with two goals and two assists. Freshman
John Murphy (Walpole, Mass./Bridgton Academy) had two goals and an
assist and classmate Jeff Moore (Worcester, Mass./Saint
John’s) added a goal and two assists.
Junior Jason Flanigan (Shrewsbury,
Mass./Shrewsbury) was the lone Raven to find the net more
than once, tallying a pair of goals. Senior captain Luke
Ferreira (Farmington, Maine/ Mount Blue), sophomore
Lucas Hamory (Canton, Mass./Canton) and freshman
Jack Scanlan (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck North)
each had a goal and an assist for Franklin Pierce.
Assumption scored the first three goals of the game to take an
early lead, but a man-up goal by Scanlan and Flanigan’s 18th
tally of the year closed the gap to 3-2 with 6:04 left in the first
quarter. Assumption scored three straight goals to end the first
quarter, including the last two by Murphy 1:16 apart, to take a 6-2
lead after one.
The lead was 7-3 early in the second quarter when the Ravens put
together their best offensive stretch of the afternoon, scoring
three consecutive goals to lower the deficit to two. Ferreira began
the surge with his 24th tally of the season, and Flanigan capped it
3:12 later to bring the score to 7-5 with 9:01 left in the first
half.
Assumption got two goals back before the end of the half, however,
and then outscored Franklin Pierce, 6-2, in the second half to
secure the victory.
Senior Chris Bird (North Andover, Mass./Saint John’s Prep)
made 10 saves to earn the win for Assumption, while freshman
goaltender Shea Campbell (Centerport,
N.Y./Harborfields) took the loss for Franklin Pierce
despite making 15 saves on 29 shots.
Before the game, the Ravens held a brief pre-game ceremony to
honor senior captains Ferreira, Russell Hodson (Chilmark,
Mass./Martha's Vineyard) and Matt Sampson
(Scituate, Mass./ Scituate), who will be playing their
final game in a Raven uniform tomorrow afternoon.
Franklin Pierce (2-11, 1-8 NE-10) will play its final game of the
2008 season tomorrow at noon, as the Ravens host top-ranked Le
Moyne College at Sodexho Field. Assumption completes its season
with a 4-11 overall record and a 2-8 conference mark.
