Dominican Edges Franklin Pierce, 11-7

Smith leads Chargers with a game-high six points in victory

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (April 25, 2007) - The Franklin Pierce men's lacrosse team was edged 11-7 by Dominican College in non-conference action this evening at the DC Athletic Field. The Chargers registered eight goals over the last two periods to collect their fourth victory of the season.

Sophomore Owen Smith III (Cornwall, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) led the Dominican charge with a game-high six points on three goals and three assists, while freshman Alex Jones (Saint Albert, Alberta/Bellrose) collected five points on two scores and three helpers. Freshman Francisco Silva (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) was also solid, chipping in with one goal and two assists.

Freshman Brendan Rooney (Newton, Mass./Newton) was strong for Franklin Pierce, totaling a team-high four points on three goals and one assist. Senior Michael Willis (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) aided the Ravens with two goals scored, while sophomore Ryan Boller (New Cannan, Conn./New Cannan) and junior Rob Frankel (Setauket, N.Y./Ward-Melville) chipped in with one score apiece.

Franklin Pierce jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Rooney registered back-to-back goals at the 13:11 mark. Dominican added a goal with 1:46 remaining in the period to cut the Raven lead to 2-1.

In the second frame, Dominican came out firing with two consecutive goals by junior Joe Cobis (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) and Smith, but Franklin Pierce responded with two scores by Willis and Frankel in an eight second span to gain a 4-3 lead at the half.

Dominican opened the second half with a score by junior Micah Brown (Flanders, N.Y./Riverhead) at the 13:35 mark to knot the score at four. After the two teams traded goals twice, the Chargers pulled ahead with 0:40 remaining in the third period on Smith's second score of the game.

In the fourth period, Dominican collected four unanswered goals to start the frame and take an 11-6 lead. Silva led the Charger rally with one goal and two assists, while Smith netted his third goal of the game for the hat-trick. Franklin Pierce added a goal late in the frame on a score by Willis, but sophomore goaltender Joe Assante (Weston, N.Y./Pine Bush) registered five, fourth quarter saves to preserve the victory.

Dominican out-shot Franklin Pierce 35 to 26 in the contest. Senior goaltender Ben Lek (Gaithersburg, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) stopped seven shots for the Ravens, while Assante finished with ten stops for the Chargers.

Franklin Pierce (3-10, 0-8 NE-10) will conclude its season as it travels to Assumption College on Saturday at 12 p.m. Dominican College (4-7, 0-5 CACC) will host Saint Michael's College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
