Saint Anselm Tops Franklin Pierce, 17-5

Allwarden totals three goals, four assists to lead Hawks

RINDGE, N.H. (April 16, 2003) - Sophomore Kevin Allwarden registered three goals and dished four helpers to lead Saint Anselm College to its first Conference win, a 17-5 victory over Franklin Pierce College, in Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse action at the Franklin Pierce Field Hockey/Lacrosse field this afternoon.

Allwarden led all scorers with seven total points in the matchup. Senior captain, Justin Shairs, followed with two goals and four assists, while sophomore Tim Armstrong tallied a match-high five goals for the Hawks. Junior Cliff Ambrose added a pair of goals and three assists in the win.

Franklin Pierce sophomore Nick Mincola (Cohasset, Mass./Gov. Drummer Acad.) and junior Derek Mandatori (Newton, Mass./Newton North) both extended their scoring streaks to five games with two goals, while senior Brendon Dillon (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) netted his second marker of the year.

The Ravens came out firing immediately after the whistle, but failed to capitalize on two key scoring chances early in the match. The Hawks then pounced on a loose ball, took it down field and blew a shot past goalkeeper Andy Cote (Middleton, Mass./Masconomet) just two minutes into the match to take the one goal lead. The Hawks tacked on another marker less than two minutes later to go up by two.

The Ravens cut the Saint Anselm lead to one goal as Mincola blasted a shot from the left side midway through the quarter. The Hawks then netted four goals in a span of two minutes to pull away from the Ravens.

Saint Anselm opened up the second quarter with two more tallies before the Ravens answered with an unassisted goal from Mandatori. The Ravens held the Hawks off for most of the second quarter, despite being outshot 35 to 17 in the first half. The Hawks continued the attack into the second half, adding eight markers in the third and fourth quarters to make the final, Saint Anselm 17, Franklin Pierce 5.

Saint Anselm goalkeeper Alex Gostanian picked up his second win of the season, making seven saves in 60 minutes of work. Cote totaled 19 saves despite the loss.

Franklin Pierce (0-5, 0-4 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow when it travels to Bentley College for a Conference game at 7:30 p.m.
