Men’s Ice Hockey Skates to Penalty-Filled, 1-1 (OT) Tie at Anna Maria

Stephen Jacobs

AUBURN, Mass. (November 12, 2019) – It was a bit of a Tuesday night slog for the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team and Anna Maria at the Horgan Arena. The two teams combined for 18 penalties totaling 39 minutes, but could muster only a combined 1-for-18 on the resultant power plays. At times, it felt as if a tie would be the most-appropriate outcome for the evening, and it would be where the contest ended up: in a 1-1 draw after a scoreless overtime period.

With the tie, Franklin Pierce moved to 1-2-1 on the young season, while Anna Maria now stands at 2-1-2.

The first period went scoreless on Tuesday night, but Franklin Pierce took what would prove to be a costly set of back-to-back penalties at the end of the frame. Sophomore forward Alex O'Dowd (Hanover, Mass.) went off for holding at the 19:28 mark, while freshman forward Conor Foley (Nahant, Mass.) was whistled for delay of game on a faceoff violation at 19:57.

As a result, Anna Maria carried an extended two-man advantage into the second period, and the AMCATS needed just 20 seconds of the middle stanza to capitalize. Sophomore forward Jack Sitzman took the original shot from the left side, which touched off a mad scramble in and around the Franklin Pierce crease. The puck was deflected by multiple players, including Anna Maria freshman forward Michael Padgeon, before sophomore forward Sam Cyr-Ledoux eventually knocked it into the net for his second goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce would come up empty on a five-minute, hitting-from-behind major against Anna Maria senior forward Aleksandr Makarov at the 6:04 mark of the second. From there, the two teams seemed determined to give each other man-advantage opportunities for the remainder of the period. The two teams traded two penalties apiece over the final 7:03 of the frame, with each of the four infractions taking place in the offensive end. Despite the gifts from the opposition though, there would be no further second-period scoring.

The Ravens would strike for the game-tying goal at the 1:56 mark of the third period, directly off a faceoff in the left-wing circle. Foley won the draw back to the left point for sophomore defenseman Stephen Jacobs (Hingham, Mass.). Jacobs held for a beat and then flipped a high wrist shot through traffic which found its way into the top-right corner for Jacobs' first collegiate goal.

Minutes later, Franklin Pierce would find itself set up with 49 seconds of 5-on-3 time at 6:31, and the Ravens used their timeout to get more ice time for its top power-play unit. However, 28 seconds later, the advantage would be downgraded to a 4-on-3, as Jacobs was whistled for his third penalty of the game, this one a slashing infraction in the neutral zone, against a player who was a minimal threat with his team down two players.

Anna Maria later came up empty on a power-play chance in the final four minutes of regulation and then each team had a barren man-advantage opportunity in overtime, as the score stayed locked on 1-1 through the final buzzer.

Making his first collegiate start, sophomore goaltender Adam Carman (Vestal, N.Y.) stopped 34 of 35 shots in the tie (0-0-1) for Franklin Pierce. Fellow sophomore Julius Huset (0-0-1) made 32 saves against 33 shots at the other end for Anna Maria.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Nov. 16, when they travel to Massachusetts Dartmouth for a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. at Hetland Arena in New Bedford, Mass.
