Men’s Ice Hockey Dropped at SNHU, 8-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. (December 1, 2018) – A four-goal second period accounted for just half the damage on Saturday night, as the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team dropped an 8-1 decision on the road at Southern New Hampshire in Northeast-10 Conference play. Senior forward Brett Strawn led the way for the Penmen in the victory at the Ice Den, with four points on one goal and three assists.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 5-5-0 (2-3-0 NE10), while SNHU improves to 6-3-2 (3-2-1 NE10). SNHU piled up an advantage of 38-20 in shots on goal on the way to the seven-goal victory.

SNHU struck twice in the first period and never looked back on Saturday. Junior forward Ryan Spagnoli opened the scoring at the 8:41 mark, with his third goal of the season, off of an assist from fellow junior forward DJ Goldstein. Freshman forward Andy Somervilee followed with his third of the campaign at 17:26, which would stand as the game-winning goal, off of assists from senior forward Chris Moquin and Strawn.

The Penmen poured in four more goals in the middle stanza to assert control over the game. Freshman forward Cole Stewart notched his second of the year on the power play at 3:54, unassisted, to make it 3-0. The score went to 4-0 just 70 seconds later, at 5:04, as Moquin picked up his fourth of the season off of Strawn's second helper of the night. Sophomore forward Griffin Connor would net his first of the year at 17:59, with junior defenseman Kaleb Godbout and Goldstein providing the assists. Somervilee capped the middle period's scoring just 32 seconds later, at 18:31, with his second of the contest, while Strawn and Moquin each notched their third point of the night with assists.

SNHU pushed the lead out as high as 8-0, with two more strikes early in the third. At the 1:41 mark, Strawn rounded out his big night with his fourth goal of the season, while Somervilee added the lone assist to finish off his three-point day (1-2-3). At 5:35, it was another power-play tally, off the stick of sophomore forward Kyle Galloway, who picked up his third goal of the season, with assists credited to freshman forward Jake Cox and sophomore defenseman Max Kent.

Franklin Pierce picked up its lone goal of the night with a power-play marker of its own with just 51 seconds to play. Junior forward Alex Lester (Methuen, Mass.) put home his third of the year at the 19:09 mark, with junior forward Matthew Toombs (Pleasanton, Calif.) and freshman forward Justin Blanchette (Monroe, Conn.) tacking on the assists.

Sophomore goaltender Ian Wallace (West Islip, N.Y.) started in net for Franklin Pierce, made 22 saves against 28 shots over the first two periods and suffered the loss (4-5-0) in the crease. Freshman netminder Adam Carman (Vestal, N.Y.) took over to start the third period and stopped eight of 10 shots the rest of the way. At the other end of the ice, junior Kurt Gutting (4-1-2) collected 19 saves against 20 shots to pick up the win for SNHU.

The Ravens return to the ice on Wednesday, Dec. 5, when they wrap up the semester by returning home to host Massachusetts Dartmouth in a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon.
