Men’s Ice Hockey Falls at Stonehill, 5-1

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (November 17, 2018) – The Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team was defeated on the road on Saturday evening at Stonehill, 5-1, in Northeast-10 Conference play at Foxboro Sports Center. Senior forward Shamus Maloney notched his first collegiate hat trick in the victory for Stonehill.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-3-0 (1-2-0 NE10), while Stonehill improves to 1-3-0 (1-2-0 NE10). The two teams will also meet on Nov. 24 and Feb. 12 to round out the three-game season series.

Stonehill struck twice in the first period on Saturday and never looked back. Junior forward Connor Jewett opened the scoring at the 6:46 mark, with his second goal of the season, off of assists from freshman forward Charles Page and junior forward Ryan Meade. Maloney's second goal of the campaign doubled the lead at 16:57, unassisted.

The Skyhawks tacked on two more goals in the second period to stretch the lead out to 4-0. At 4:39, it was the first goal of the year for sophomore forward Kyle Woodruff, with senior defenseman Connor Collier providing the lone assist. Maloney chalked up his second of the contest at 11:43, off of a setup from senior defenseman Thomas Mahoney.

Franklin Pierce got on the board with a power-play marker at 6:05 of the third period to cut the gap to 4-1. Freshman forward Sean Crowley (Sandown, N.H.) put away his third goal of the season, off of assists from freshman forward Anthony Nikolopoulos (Burlington, Mass.) and junior forward Cameron Shepardson (Albany, N.Y.).

Stonehill would tack on a shorthanded, empty-net tally at 19:41 to create the 5-1 final. Maloney completed his hat trick with another unassisted goal.

Sophomore goaltender Ian Wallace (West Islip, N.Y.) started in net for Franklin Pierce and suffered the loss (3-3-0) after making 17 saves against the first 20 shots, over a span of 24:39, and was removed after the third Stonehill goal. Freshman netminder Kyle Martin (Westford, Mass.) went the rest of the way and piled up 31 saves against 32 shots.

At the other end of the ice, senior William Palmer (1-2-0) stopped 33 of 34 shots to pick up the win in the crease for Stonehill. Stonehill recorded an advantage of 53-34 in shots on goal in the game.

The Ravens return to the ice on Tuesday, Nov. 20, when they return home to host Framingham State in a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon.
