Men’s Ice Hockey Blanked at Suffolk in Season Opener, 7-0

BOSTON (October 26, 2018) – Sophomore forward Jack Kelly (2-1-3) and senior defenseman Mikhail Bryan (0-3-3) tallied three points each on Friday night, as Suffolk dealt the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team a 7-0 defeat in the season opener for both squads at Emmons Horrigan O'Neil Rink. Franklin Pierce was outshot, 48-25, in the non-conference contest.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce opens the season at 0-1-0, while Suffolk kicks off its campaign at 1-0-0.

Suffolk poured home four first-period goals on Friday and never looked back. Senior forward Tommy Bishop opened the scoring 11:55 into the proceedings, off of an assist from sophomore defenseman Joe Vingi. Kelly followed with the first of his two goals just 25 seconds later, while Bryan picked up the lone assist.

The Rams struck twice in quick succession later in the period as well. At 18:59, sophomore forward Matt Bucher set up sophomore line mate Joseph Mortillaro. Just 14 seconds later, at 19:13, Kelly put home his second of the night, off of assists from Bryan and freshman forward Joe Feeney.

Suffolk added two goals in the second and one in the third to create the 7-0 final. In the middle period, junior forward David Lappin found the back of the net at 7:56, while freshman defenseman Billy Roche picked up an assist. Junior forward Joe Admirand followed with the sixth goal of the game at 16:06, off of assists from junior defenseman Nick Abbene and sophomore defenseman Miller Rubin.

Bryan closed out his three-assist day in the third period, as he teamed with Kelly to set up freshman forward Sean Montgomery's first collegiate goal at 6:09.

Sophomore goaltender Ian Wallace (West Islip, N.Y.) started in net for Franklin Pierce, made 21 saves against 26 shots on goal over the opening 27:56 and suffered the loss (0-1-0). Freshman Kyle Martin (Westford, Mass.) took over after the fifth Suffolk goal and stopped 20 of 22 shots over the final 32:04.

At the other end of the ice, senior Michael Levine (1-0-0) stopped all 25 shots he faced to notch his third career shutout.

The Ravens return to the ice on Tuesday, Oct. 30, when they hold their home opener: a non-conference contest against Anna Maria. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon.
