Colella, Carroll score for Ravens

Carroll Carroll scored his second goal of the ICFCU Shootout against Assumption on Saturday afternoon.

FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 13, 2010) – Freshman forward Bryan Colella (Medfield, Mass.) and senior defenseman Sean Carroll (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) each found the back of the net on Saturday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team was defeated, 5-2, by Assumption in the consolation round of the IC Federal Credit Union Shootout, hosted by Fitchburg State at Wallace Civic Center. Junior forward Pat O'Kane scored twice in the win for Assumption.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-6-0 (0-0-0 Northeast-10), while Assumption improves to 3-2-0 (0-0-0 Northeast-10).

After both teams came up empty on a pair of power-play opportunities in the first period, the clubs would trade goals in the middle stanza. O'Kane opened the scoring 44 seconds into the second period with his second goal of the season. Junior forward Taylor Larsen provided the assist on the power-play marker. Late in the period, Colella answered for Franklin Pierce with an unassisted goal on the power play at the 15:21 mark. For Colella, it was his first collegiate goal.

The puck would find the back of the net early and often in the third period, as Assumption jumped to a 3-1 lead with goals 35 seconds apart at 5:51 and 6:26 of the frame. It was sophomore forward Joe Fimiani who struck first, with his second of the season on assists from sophomore forward Cam Maillet and freshman forward Ross White. Next, Larsen picked up the eventual game-winning goal, as he potted his fourth of the season with helpers from senior forward Pat Fitzgibbons and senior defenseman Marc Labb.

The Ravens would trim the lead to 3-2 midway through the period. Carroll scored his second goal of the ICFCU Shootout, an unassisted tally at 10:19. Assumption reclaimed the two-goal lead with O'Kane's second of the afternoon, from junior defenseman Mike Looney, at 15:56. The Greyhounds created the 5-2 final with an insurance marker from freshman forward Mike Heyde with seven seconds to play. Larsen assisted on Heyde's goal to complete his three-point game.

Freshman goaltender Dave O'Brien (Groton, Mass.) made 34 saves and took the loss (0-1-0) in front of the Franklin Pierce net. Junior Nick Blanchette stopped 22 shots to pick up the win (2-1-0) between the pipes for Assumption.

Assumption posted a 39-24 advantage in shots on goal in the game and went 1-for-6 on the power play. Franklin Pierce finished 1-for-3 with the man-advantage.

The Ravens return to the ice on Thursday, Nov. 18, when they travel to Worcester State for a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Daniel Horgan Memorial Ice Rink in Auburn, Mass.
