Siok Siok made 43 saves in the season-opener at Utica on Friday night.

UTICA, N.Y. (October 29, 2010) – Freshman forward Trever Hertz scored two goals and added three assists to total five points on Friday night to lead Utica to an 8-0 victory over the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team in non-conference play at Utica Memorial Auditorium. Junior goaltender Ben Siok (Holden, Mass.) made 43 saves in defeat for Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce opens the season at 0-1-0 (0-0-0 Northeast-10), while Utica improves to 2-0-0 (0-0-0 ECAC West).

Utica would score the only goal it would need at the 13:19 mark of the opening frame when sophomore defenseman Josh Schmitt found the net for his first goal of the season. Junior forward Tim Coffman and Hertz provided the assists. The game would remain 1-0 through the first intermission and until the 6:34 mark of the second period, when freshman forward Adam Graff netted his first of the season on the power play, while sophomore forward Evan Chlanda and Hertz picked up the helpers.

The floodgates would not start to open until near the end of the second period, when Utica opened up the lead to 4-0. The Pioneers got a goal from freshman forward Nick Geraci (his first of the season) and a power-play tally from Chlanda (his second) over the final 3:09 of the period. Hertz dished out the last of his three assists on the Geraci goal, while Coffman picked up his second point of the night with a helper on Chlanda's marker.

Utica would use a four-goal third period, bookended by Hertz's first two goals of the season and the 0:25 and 18:38 marks, to create the 8-0 final. In between, freshman forwards Jordan Hobaica and George Lotito each scored their first goals of the season. Coffman assisted on all four goals in the third period to finish with six assists on the night, while Geraci and Schmitt each added an assist to post two-point games.

Siok made 43 saves in net and took the loss (0-1-0) for Franklin Pierce. Freshman goaltender Nick Therrien stopped all 19 shots sent his way to pick up the win (1-0-0) and post his first career shutout between the pipes for Utica.

Utica posted a 51-19 advantage in shots on goal in the game and went 3-for-7 on the power play. Franklin Pierce finished 0-for-6 with the man-advantage.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Oct. 30, when they remain in Utica for the second game of the weekend series. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Utica Memorial Auditorium.
