PREVIEW: Men’s Golf On the Hunt for Their First Ever NE10 Title

RINDGE, N.H. (October 3, 2019) Following their third straight trip to the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional, the Franklin Pierce University men's golf program kicked off their 2019-20 campaign in September preparing for the 2019 Northeast-10 Conference Championship hosted for the second consecutive year by Le Moyne College and the En-Joie Golf Club in Endicott, N.Y. A practice round takes place Saturday before competition opens Sunday and concludes Monday.

The crimson and gray and in search of their first-ever NE10 title and an automatic bid to what would be their fourth straight appearance and fifth time overall in the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regionals. Assumption College, the pre-championship favorite as voted by the conference coaches' is looking for their first league championship.  

 

SCOUTING THE RAVENS

Pierce has only competed at two tournaments in the early going, the home FPU Fall Invitational and on the road at the Penmen Fall Invitational. At their home tourney, Franklin Pierce placed fourth (599, +23) as they fell from second to fourth even though they bettered their score by subtracting three strokes. Two weeks later at the Penmen Fall Invitational, the Ravens played 54 holes, 36 on Monday and the final round on Tuesday. FPU completed the tournament in fifth place (889, +25) out of 17 programs and was as high as second place (290, +2) after the conclusion of the first round, but the Ravens struggled in their second go-around (305, +17) falling to seventh. In the third and final round, FPU produced the third-lowest score (294, +6) to rise to fifth place.

 

HOW THE RAVENS LINEUP

Franklin Pierce heads to New York and the En-Joie Golf Club, a par 72, 6,650-yard course with the following five-golfer lineup.

 

1. Junior Dylan Plis (Camillus, N.Y.) - Tee Times: 10/6: 1st Tee, 12:55 p.m., 10/7: TBD

Plis will golf from the number one spot. He has tied for 38th place at the FPU Fall Invitational and tied for 12th at the Penmen Fall Invitational. During his 12th place finish a couple of weeks ago, Plis had the Ravens lowest 18 hole score of the season, a 69 (-3) during the first round. He then turned in a 77 (+5) and a 75 (+3) card to finish at 221 (+5).

 

2. Senior Nate Patterson (Conway, Mass.) - Tee Times: 10/6: 1st Tee, 12:45 p.m., 10/7: TBD

Patterson has racked up two top-20 showings, a share of 17th place at the FPU Fall Invitational when he fired a consistent 75 (+3) for both rounds and a tie in 12th place (221, +5) at the Penmen Fall Invitational. In Canterbury, Patterson putted home a 72 (E) scorecard for his best round of the year up to this point.

 

3. Senior Keeton Foster (Spofford, N.H.) - Tee Times: 10/6: 1st Tee, 12:35 p.m., 10/7: TBD

Foster will compete from the third slot in the five golfer rotation. In the season opener, the FPU Fall Invitational the senior compiled a 147 (+3) overall showing including a first-round 72 (E) card to finish within the top-10 at ninth place. He had the second most pars (26) in the field of golfers. Foster then improved during the second and third rounds at the Penmen Fall Invitational knocking off seven total strokes in his final 36 holes.

 

4. Senior Sam Myers (Colchester, Vt.) - Tee Times: 10/6: 1st Tee, 12:25 p.m., 10/7: TBD

Myers, a one-time NE10 weekly honor roll choice this fall tied for third place at the FPU Fall Invitational completing the two rounds at 145 (+1). In his second round, Myers shot a two-under par 70. He tied for second in par-five scoring (4.53, -3). At the Penmen Fall Invitational, the senior deadlocked in 22nd place at 224 (+8).

 

5. Senior Liam Donohue (Vernon, Conn.) - Tee Times: 10/6: 1st Tee, 12:15 p.m., 10/7: TBD

Donohue will round out the Raven five golfer lineup. He tallied a 160 (+16) at the FPU Fall Invitational good enough for 48th place. At the Penmen Fall Invitational, Donahue tied with his classmate Myers at 224 (+8) for 22nd place. He shot a team-low third round 71 (-1) which matched his personal career-low.
