Gittens buzzer beater helps Men’s Basketball escape with OT victory over Assumption

RINDGE, N.H. (January 3, 2015) – Sophomore Donte Gittens (Hartford, Conn.) seemed to just float down the floor with just over three seconds remaining in overtime before flying through the air and putting a finger roll off the glass to give the Franklin Pierce University Men's Basketball team a victory over the Assumption College Greyhounds by a final score of 68-66.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 8-5 (3-3 Northeast-10) while Assumption drops to 5-7 (2-5 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce was able to jump out to the quick lead off the bat, but that time would be the only time they would control a lead until the end of the game. With 11:43 remaining in the first half, Assumption would take the lead and keep it through halftime, going into the locker room with a 14-point lead. After the start of the second half, Assumption would extend that lead to 17 points.

However, the Ravens would keep themselves in the game as both teams shot less than satisfactory from the field throughout the game. Through a span of 10 minutes in the middle of the second half, the Ravens went on a 19-4 scoring spree to tie things up with just less than five minutes to play. However, Assumption would still control the lead all through the rest of play. That was, until junior Tyler Iacuone (Mahopac, N.Y.) drained a three pointer to tie the game at 59-59 with 11 seconds remaining in the game.

The Greyhounds had an opportunity on the other side of the floor, as Marcus Murray had a lane to the hoop, only to be blocked by senior Ryen Vilmont (Philadelphia, Pa.) with :02 remaining to send the game to overtime.

In the OT frame, the game would bounce back and forth, with Franklin Pierce leading a majority of the period. However, thanks to a made layup from Murray, Assumption retied the game up with just a few seconds to play. As things looked as if there might be a second overtime, Gittens took it upon himself to make sure that didn't happen and flew down the court for the score as time expired.

Vilmont would lead all scoring on the day with 22 points, while Gittens came in second best with 15 points. Freshman Mike McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine) would come in at double-figures with 13 points, while Iacuone poured in 11 key points as well. Paul Becklens (Boston, Mass.) also had a solid game with eight assists, while both Vilmont and Gittens each had five blocks on the day.

Murray would put in a 20-point performance, including going 11 for 15 from the free throw line for Assumption. Karl Ziegler would also have a strong offensive day with 16 points, while Terrance Bobb-Jones chipped in with a double-double of 10 points, 11 rebounds. Jimmy Zenevitch would snatch a game-best 16 rebounds on the day as well for the Greyhounds.

The Ravens will return to the floor on Wednesday, January 7th when they take on Saint Michael's in a tough Northeast-10 matchup at the Fieldhouse.
