Vilmont leads Men’s Basketball to victory, rolls over NYIT 84-74

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (November 15, 2014) – Senior forward Ryen Vilmont (Philadelphia, Pa.) decided that Sunday afternoon that a win was in store for the Franklin Pierce Ravens, giving them a 2-0 record to begin the season. Vilmont did just that, collecting a double-double with a team-high 27 points on 7-11 shooting on the day, including sinking six three pointers, and corralling 11 rebounds. For NYIT, Darian Hooker would match Vilmont's performance with 27 points of his own while dishing out four assists.

Coming up big behind Vilmont for the second day in a row would be senior guard Paul Becklens (Boston, Mass.) and fellow sophomore Jaleel Bell (Boston, Mass.). Bell would collect his first career double-double finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Becklens would finish with a strong 11 points, seven assist effort. Freshman Dustin Cole (Standish, Maine) and Mike McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine) would play many meaningful minutes for the Ravens, as Cole ended with five points, two assists, and a rebound while McDevitt was again strong on the boards ending with six rebounds.

The Ravens would shoot around a consistent 50% from the field all game, keeping a constant pace and going into the locker room at halftime up 41-22. NYIT would struggle, shooting fewer than 20 percent in the first half before coming out and outscoring the Ravens 52-43 in the second half on 46.7 percent shooting.

Franklin Pierce would jump out to an early 8-0 lead right off the bat, and NYIT wouldn't get on the board until almost 5 minutes in. The Ravens biggest lead would come with about five minutes left in the game, as the Ravens would jump out to a 22 point lead before a late NYIT run would slim it down until the final buzzer.

To back up Hooker's performace, Kachi Nzerem also finished with a strong showing, sinking a respectable 14 points on the day, including 4-6 shooting from behind the arc.

The Ravens will return to the hardwood tomorrow, November 17 as the square off against Division I St. John's at 7:30 p.m. in the prestigious NIT Invitational Preseason Tip-Off Tournament on the campus of St. John's in Queens, N.Y.
