Men's Basketball Goes on Furious Second Half Rally to Pick Up Satisfying 85-67 Win Over Saint Anselm
Jeff Manchester goes over 1,000 points for his career
RINDGE, N.H. (February 12, 2011) -- The Franklin Pierce
University men's basketball team went on a 38-6 run to end the game
and downed Saint Anselm, 85-67, on Saturday afternoon at The
Fieldhouse in Rindge. The Ravens improved to 6-18 overall and 4-15
in the Northeast-10, while the Hawks fell to 17-6 and 13-6 in
league play.
Senior guard Jeff Manchester (Gorham, Maine)
tossed in 17 points, including knocking down a three-pointer at the
buzzer to go over 1,000-career points. He entered Saturday's game
needing 16 points to reach the feat, and currently stands at 1,001
points following the victory.
Sophomore guard Eric Jean-Guillaume (Stamford,
Conn.) and senior guard Kinard Dozier (Dedham,
Mass.) each tossed in a team-high 19 points.
Jean-Guillaume collected seven rebounds, handed out seven assists
and swiped two steals in the process. Dozier had five boards and
two helpers in the process.
Sophomore guard Nigel Van Oostrum (Sheffield,
England) was Franklin Pierce's fourth double-digit scorer
with 10 points, while also handing out six assists and pulling down
four rebounds.
Allen Harris led Saint Anselm with 21 points. Pat Luptowski added
10 points for the Hawks, including knocking down a triple with
12:12 remaining to give his team a comfortable 61-47 advantage.
Saint Anselm appeared headed for a victory, but then the Ravens
pulled off an amazing comeback, which saw them score 38 of the
game's last 44 points to grab a great victory over a team which was
ranked among the top-five in the regional rankings heading into the
weekend.
Freshman guard Andre Blackwood (Paterson, N.J.)
sparked the rally with a triple as the Ravens reeled off
11-straight points to pull within 61-58 with 8:49 to go. Blackwood
added another trey during the run and junior guard Dayshawn
Long (New York, N.Y.) tossed in a layup.
Saint Anselm stemmed the initial tide with four points, but
Franklin Pierce countered and moments later Dozier knocked down a
three from the left wing to knot the game at 65 with 6:21 left.
That triple by Dozier sparked the Ravens to score the next 14
points to open up a commanding 79-65 lead with 1:22 left. Dozier
and Manchester each drained a three-pointer during the run and
Jean-Guillaume capped it with a pair of free throws.
Franklin Pierce's defensive play on the other end of the court made
the 14-0 run stand up as the Ravens cruised the rest of the way to
victory.
Franklin Pierce shot 44 percent from the field, including an
impressive 59 percent clip in the second half. The Ravens held
Saint Anselm to just 35 percent shooting from the field in the
second 20 minutes.
The game was tightly contested throughout the first half as Saint
Anselm built a 41-35 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
Dozier had nine points for the Ravens in the first half, while Van
Oostrum chipped in with eight.
Franklin Pierce returns to action Wednesday night when the Ravens
travel to face Merrimack in North Andover, Mass., at 7:30 p.m.
