Men's Basketball Falls at Saint Michael's 77-52

Senior guard Jeff Manchester tosses in team-high 12 points for the Ravens

BOXSCORE

COLCHESTER, Vt. (February 8, 2011) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's basketball team dropped a 77-52 decision at Saint Michael's on Tuesday night at the Ross Sports Center in Colchester, Vt. The Ravens fell to 5-18 and 3-15 in the Northeast-10, while the Purple Knights improved to 10-11 and 8-9 in league play.

Senior guard Jeff Manchester (Gorham, Maine) led the Ravens with 12 points, including knocking down a pair of three-pointers, while also getting four rebounds and two steals.

Michael Holton Jr. led four St. Mike's players who scored in double-figures as he pumped in a game-best 22 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor, including an impressive 5-of-8 effort from behind the arc.

The Ravens struggled shooting the ball as they made just 17-of-56 shots for a 30-percent clip. Saint Michael's, though, shot a solid 50 percent from the floor (27-of-53), including an impressive 57 percent from behind the arc (11-of-19).

Despite the differences in shooting percentage, the game was close throughout the opening 20 minutes as the Purple Knights held a slim 34-29 lead at halftime. Manchester tossed in 10 of his 12 points in the first half.

Saint Michael's, though, opened up its lead in the early stages of the second half and a Travis Warech layup with 15:25 remaining gave the Purple Knights a 45-35 advantage. Warech's basket essentially put the game out of reach as St. Mike's would continue to lead by double-figures the rest of the way in earning the win.

Franklin Pierce returns to action Saturday when the Ravens play host to Saint Anselm at 3:30 p.m. in The Fieldhouse in Rindge. The game, along with the women's game versus St. A's at 1:30 p.m., will be Franklin Pierce's Breast Cancer Awareness Day as the Athletics Department will honor breast cancer survivors and employees of the Norris Cotton Cancer in Keene. There will be auctions and raffle tickets sold for various Pierce Pride items.
