Men's Basketball Drops Tough 59-50 Decision at Stonehill
Kinard Dozier tallies double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds
EASTON, Mass. (February 3, 2010) – The
Franklin Pierce University men’s basketball team dropped a
tough 59-50 decision at Stonehill on Wednesday night at Merkert
Gymnasium in Easton, Mass. The Ravens dipped to 9-12 overall and
4-12 in the Northeast-10, while the Skyhawks improved to 17-4 and
14-2 in league play.
Junior guard Kinard Dozier (Dedham, Mass.) notched
a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while senior
forward Terrell Ray (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored five
points and ripped down a team-high tying 12 boards as well.
Sophomore center John Hegarty (New Bedford, Mass.)
added 11 points for the Ravens.
The first half featured four ties and five lead changes. The
Skyhawks held a 19-15 lead with 9:33 left in the period following a
layup from Mike Kernan.
The Ravens, though, responded and scored the game’s next 10
points to grab a 25-19 lead with 6:20 to go in the half. Dozier
sparked the rally with a three-pointer and senior guard
Marcus Wellman (Monroe, Conn.) capped it with a
trey of his own. Franklin Pierce would go on to take a 29-25 lead
into the locker room at halftime.
Dozier had a strong all-around game in the first half for the
Ravens as he scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds. Hegarty
and junior guard Jeff Manchester (Gorham, Maine)
each netted five points and Ray ripped down seven boards. The
Ravens shot a strong 42 percent (10-of-24) from the field, while
limiting the Skyhawks to just 33 percent (10-of-30) from the
floor.
Franklin Pierce continued to add to its lead in the early stages of
the second half and went up 41-35 with 10:28 left following a
three-point play from Dozier as he converted a layup and the
ensuing foul shot.
However, Stonehill regrouped and outscored the Ravens, 14-3, over
the next seven minutes to capture a slim 49-44 lead. Ivan Almeida
aided the surge with a three-pointer and Sam Markle capped it with
a layup.
Ray and Hegarty answered for Franklin Pierce with a layup and dunk,
respectively, to pull the Ravens within one at 49-48 with 2:58
remaining.
Again, Stonehill had a response as A.J. Rudowitz ignited a 10-0
surge with a driving layup. That late run put the game out of reach
as Stonehill went on to earn the win.
Four Skyhawks scored in double-figures, including Kernan, who had
12. Randall Stallworth, Almeida and Daniel Heppert each chipped in
11 points apiece.
The Ravens return to action Saturday afternoon when they play host
to Southern New Hampshire in The Fieldhouse in Rindge at 3:30 p.m.
