WEST HAVEN, Conn. (February 14, 2009) - The University of New Haven held Franklin Pierce University under 30-percent shooting in posting a 61-42 victory in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at Charger Gymnasium this afternoon.

Junior Cassius Chaney (Old Saybrook, Conn./Notre Dame Prep) led three New Haven players in double-figures with 19 points, nine rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot. Classmate Kelvin Jackson (Upper Marlboro, Md./Gwynn Park) added 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots, while senior D.J. Sackmann (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock Township) posted 14 points, aided by 3-for-6 shooting from three-point range, and three rebounds.

No Franklin Pierce players reached double-figures as junior Terrell Ray (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fort Hamilton) led the Ravens with nine points and three rebounds. Sophomore Kinard Dozier (Dedham, Mass./The Winchendon School) added eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.

New Haven, which snapped a four-game skid with today's win, finished shooting 43.1-percent (22-for-51) from the field after hitting 52.2-percent (12-for-23) in the second half to break open a four-point (25-21) halftime lead. Franklin Pierce was held to 26.8-percent (15-for-56) shooting from the field.

Two Ray free-throws opened the scoring 1:18 into the contest, but New Haven reeled off a 10-2 run over the next six and a half minutes to take a 10-4 lead after a Chaney jumper with 12:23 left in the first half and the Chargers never trailed again. Franklin Pierce closed within a point (14-13) after a layup by freshman Ashton Graham (Brampton, Ontario/Gaither) with 8:25 left in the half. The Chargers extended their lead back to eight (21-13) after a pair of free-throws from Chaney with 5:02 left before the break.

New Haven settled for a four-point (25-21) halftime advantage, but expanded that to ten points (33-23) after a Jackson jumper 3:29 into the second half. The Chargers used an 11-3 run to take an 18-point lead (46-28) after a Sackmann three with 8:33 to play. Franklin Pierce was only able to get within 11 points (50-39) once, after a Dozier three with 2:38 remaining, the rest of the way.

Franklin Pierce (10-14, 7-12 NE-10) is back in action on Monday when it visits Saint Anselm College for a makeup game from December 12 at 7:30 p.m. The Ravens return home next Saturday, February 21, to host American International College at 3:30 p.m. New Haven (8-16, 6-13 NE-10) hosts Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
