Dozier earns men’s basketball Freshman of the Week honors

RINDGE, N.H. (January 22, 2008)
– Three Franklin Pierce University student-athletes were honored by the Northeast-10 Conference this week, the office announced on Tuesday.

Sophomore Casey Goodell (Rochester, N.H./Laconia Leafs) and freshman Jeremy Rossignolo (Rochester, N.Y./Springfield Pics) were honored as men’s hockey Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively, while freshman Kinard Dozier (Dedham, Mass./The Winchendon School) was named the men’s basketball Freshman of the Week.

Goodell, the fourth Raven ice hockey player to be named a conference Player of the Week this season, earns his first career honor after scoring two goals and adding an assist in two contests last week. The sophomore began the week by assisting on a tally by senior Ryan Strayer (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Enfield (Conn.)) against Western New England College on Wednesday night. On Saturday, the center recorded his second multi-goal game of the season (and third of his career) with first- and second-period tallies against Salve Regina University.

Through 17 games, Goodell ranks third on the Ravens with 17 points on five goals and 12 assists. The Rochester, N.H., native currently sits fourth in the Northeast-10 in assists and sixth in points, while his 12 assists also are tied for fifth place on the school’s single-season list. Earlier this season, Goodell tied two program records by recording four assists and five points in the Ravens’ 9-6 win over Worcester State College on Nov. 12.

In 34 career games, Goodell has scored 10 goals and added 14 assists for 24 points. He leads all Raven underclassmen in all three career categories.

Rossignolo was named the NE-10 men’s hockey Freshman of the Week for the first time after turning away 48-of-55 shots in a pair of overtime games last week. The Rochester, N.Y., native made 18 saves against Western New England on Wednesday night before stopping a season-high 30 shots versus Salve Regina on Saturday.

The freshman has become the Ravens’ primary starting netminder this season, having appeared in a team-high 10 games with nine starts. Rossignolo leads the team with a 4.10 goals against average and an .855 save percentage. In the last six games (all starts), he has recorded a 3.44 GAA and an .876 save percentage, and also picked up his first collegiate point with an assist against Saint Anselm College on Jan. 9.

The Franklin Pierce men’s ice hockey team (4-13-0, 0-3-0 NE-10, 2-7-0 ECAC NE), which has seen at least one of its players earn a conference honor in each of the last four weeks, returns to action on Saturday night, when the Ravens travel to Nichols College for an 8:30 p.m. faceoff.

Dozier was named the men’s basketball Freshman of the Week for the first time in his career after averaging 21.5 points (on 57 percent shooting), three rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game as the Ravens split two contests.

The freshman guard set a season-high with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including five three-pointers, in the team’s first game of the week against Le Moyne College on Wednesday. He then set a season high in points for the second consecutive game in a 63-62 win over Stonehill College on Saturday, pouring in a game-high 24 points after connecting on nine of his 15 shots (including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc). Dozier also added four assists, two rebounds and two steals against the Skyhawks.

The Dedham, Mass., native has played in all 17 games so far this season for the Ravens, ranking second on the team with 10.2 points per game in just over 29 minutes per contest. Dozier also paces Franklin Pierce with 2.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game while taking down 3.8 rebounds per game from the guard position.

Franklin Pierce (6-11, 2-10 NE-10) returns to action tonight, when the Ravens visit Worcester, Mass., to take on Assumption College at 7:30 p.m.
