Wellman Named NE-10 Freshman of the Week

Monroe, Conn., native honored for second time this season after 2-0 week

RINDGE, N.H. (January 8, 2007) - Franklin Pierce guard Marcus Wellman (Monroe, Conn./Hamden Hall) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Week by the Conference office this afternoon.

Wellman, who earns the award for the second time this season, averaged 13.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.5 blocked shots and a steal to help lead Franklin Pierce to a 2-0 week. He connected on 41.7-percent (5-of-12) of his shots from three-point range and converted 8-of-11 (72.7%) free-throw attempts for the week. Wellman led a balanced Ravens scoring attack in Saturday's 86-79 victory over Southern Connecticut State University with 20 points, shooting 5-of-10 from the field (4-7 three's), to go with seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals. He contributed seven points, four rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot in Wednesday's 78-63 win over American International College.

Wellman has started all 14 games in his redshirt freshman season for Franklin Pierce and is fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 11.3 points to go with four rebounds, 3.5 assists (11th NE-10) and 1.3 steals per game. He is shooting 36-percent (32-of-89) from three-point range and converting 66.7% (22-33) of his free-throws. His 2.3 three-point field goals per game is ranked 11th in the NE-10.

Wellman has led the Ravens in scoring three times this season and rebounding twice. He also collected NE-10 Freshman of the Week honors on December 4 after netting a season-high 22 points to help the Ravens past Pace University on November 29.

Franklin Pierce (8-6, 6-4 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow night when it visits Bentley College, ranked No. 4 in last week's NABC Division II poll, the leaders in the Northeast-10 at 7:30 p.m. The Ravens return home on Tuesday, January 16, when it hosts Le Moyne College at 7:30 p.m.
